BYU's Blaze Nield transfers to Utah Valley

OREM—Utah Valley University men's basketball coach Mark Madsen has announced that BYU sophomore Blaze Nield will transfer to UVU and play for the Wolverines.

"Blaze Nield is a point guard leader," said Madsen. "I love the defensive energy that Blaze brings to every game and his poise when directing his team. Blaze is a gifted passer who has the ability to set his teammates up while also finding the balance to score the ball himself keeping the defense honest. It's rare to have a point guard who has the broad skill set that Blaze possesses—from shooting threes to getting into the paint and rebounding with physicality. Blaze is an outstanding student and will fit seamlessly into the UVU community. I'm excited to welcome Blaze and his family to campus."

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard spent the 2019-20 season at BYU where he played in 17 games. Nield played his freshman season (2018-19) at Utah State Eastern where he averaged 20.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. He shot 44.3 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three-point range, and 75.3 percent from the free throw line. Nield posted season highs of 33 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists, five steals, and five threes while at USU Eastern.

Nield prepped at Lehi High School where he averaged 17.3 points, 3.1 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game during his senior year. He earned All-State Honorable Mention accolades and was ranked as the No. 2 point guard and No. 10 overall player in the state of Utah in the 2016 recruiting class.
