UVU falls to GCU, 3-1 as Tanuvasa moves into third in career points

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Kazna Tanuvasa moved into third all-time in school history for career points as Utah Valley fell to conference foe, Grand Canyon, 3-1 (23-25, 24-26, 25-21, 17-25) on the road. With the loss, the Wolverines drop to 11-11 on the season, including 6-4 in WAC play. The Lopes improve to 16-5 on the year and 8-4 in conference play.
 
After a pair of points by GCU, Tanuvasa led a 6-1 run to put UVU up 6-3 early in the opening set. Both teams went back and forth before a 7-2 run by the Grand Canyon gave the Lopes a 13-12 advantage. Tanuvasa again led Utah Valley on a 5-0 surge to regain the lead, 17-13, but GCU responded with an 8-3 run to extend its lead to 22-20. With the set tied up at 23 apiece, UVU was unable to finish the set off as the Lopes took the first set, 25-23, to go up 1-0.
 
Tanuvasa kept the Wolverines close in the second set as UVU went up 6-5 to start the set. Grand Canyon used an 8-2 run to retake the lead, 13-8, but Utah Valley countered with a 4-1 run to trim the deficit to 14-12. Both teams alternated the next eight points before the Lopes scored three-straight points to push its lead out to 20-15. After both teams traded mini runs, the Wolverines made a 5-1 push to tie the set up at 24-24. GCU scored the final two points of the set to take the second set, 26-24, to go up 2-0.
 
Grand Canyon went up 4-2 early in the third set but Kalea Kennedy sparked a 6-0 run to put the Wolverines up 8-4. The Wolverines used a 5-1 run to stretch its lead to 14-8 but GCU countered with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 15-12. Both teams went back and forth before UVU scored three-straight points to go up, 21-15. The Lopes made a final 6-3 push to cut the advantage to 24-21 before Utah Valley scored the final point of the set to take the set, 25-21.
 
Both teams went back and forth to start the fourth set before a 4-0 run by UVU put the Wolverines up 9-7. GCU used a 9-3 surge to take control of the fourth set, 18-13. Another 5-0 run by Grand Canyon put the set out of reach as the Lopes took the final set, 25-17, to win the match, 3-1.
 
Tanuvasa led the Wolverines with a 20 kill, 10 dig double-double. With her 23 points, Tanuvasa passed Jessica Endres for third all-time in UVU history for career points. She also became just the third player in school history to surpass 1700 career points. Tanuvasa is now just three kills away from passing Camie Manwill for second on the all-time kills leaderboard at Utah Valley after becoming the third player with over 1500 career kills.
 
Kristen Bell added 16 digs to go along with a team-high five total blocks while Sadie Hamson and Kendra Nock chipped in four blocks each. Abbie Miller finished with 19 assists and six digs and Natalie Palmer had a 17 assist, 12 dig double-double. Bryton Bishop led UVU with 17 digs to go along with four assists.
 
The Wolverines continue on the road as UVU heads to Las Cruces, N.M. for its final road match of the regular season against New Mexico State on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m. MT. UVU then returns home for its final homestand of the regular season as the Wolverines host California Baptist on Thursday, Nov. 11 before the season finale with Seattle U on Saturday, Nov. 13.
