SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Utah Valley offense got multiple-hit performances from
Mitch Moralez and
Alexander Marco but couldn't manage to push a run across on the day as it fell, 6-0, to Cal Poly in Sunday's series finale at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo.
With the win, the Big West Mustangs sweep the three-game non-conference series and improve to 6-4 on the year. UVU drops to 2-5 with the setback.
The Mustangs again were the first team to get things going with a two-run first-inning home run from Brooks Lee to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Cal Poly then picked up a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Nick DiCarlo and another in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-0.
The UVU offense then looked to jumpstart things in the top of the sixth following a Marco single and a
Jake Plecas walk to put two runners aboard with just one away. Cal Poly starter Andrew Alvarez then responded by striking out the next two Wolverines he faced to escape the jam.
The Mustangs then put the game away in the bottom of the sixth by adding two more insurance runs to take the six-run lead.
In the eighth, UVU got another runner into scoring position thanks to a one-out double from Marco, but the Mustang bullpen responded to strikeout the next two Wolverines once again to end the threat.
In all, Utah Valley stranded a total of eight baserunners on the base paths in the contest.
Four Mustang pitchers combined to shutout UVU on the day. Alvarez improved to 2-0 on the season after striking out eight over six-shutout innings of work to earn the victory. A trio of relievers then came on to complete the shutout. UVU starter
Mason Gray was tagged with the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year.
Marco and Moralez led UVU offensively by going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively, with a double apiece. Lee drove in three runs on the day for Cal Poly, while his teammate Matt Lopez collected three hits.
The Wolverines will next head to Portland for a newly added four-game non-conference series at the Portland Pilots next weekend at Joe Etzel Field (March 12-14). Following the Portland series, UVU will return to Orem for its home-and-conference-opening series against the defending WAC Tournament champion Sacramento State Hornets on March 19-21 at dōTERRA Field at UCCU Ballpark.
