Estrada cards 69, UVU in fourth after two rounds at WAC Championship

Victoria Estrada carded a career-best 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to move into third place on the individual leaderboard.

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Utah Valley University freshman Victoria Estrada carded a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to move into third place on the individual leaderboard with a two-round total of 1-over 143. As a team, UVU will enter Wednesday's final round at Boulder Creek Golf Club in fourth place at 21-over-par (597). 
 
Entering Tuesday tied for 10th place, the second-year freshman Estrada moved up seven spots on the leaderboard after firing the best round of her collegiate career with the 3-under 69 on Tuesday. Estrada carded an impressive tally of six birdies on the day along with 11 pars to move into a tie for third with a two-round tally of 1-over 143. The 69 matches the third-best single-round score in program history and the 143 also matches the third-best two-round total in UVU history. Estrada opened her first WAC Championship run with a 2-over 74 on Monday.
 
Fellow freshman Anna Lesa also sits in the top 10 after two rounds of play at the conference championship, as she'll enter Wednesday's final round tied for seventh with a two-round total of 1-over-par 145. After opening with a 2-under 70 on Monday, Lesa then posted a second-round 2-over 74 on Tuesday to drop four spots into the tie for seventh place. 
 
Junior Bailey Henley is next for the Wolverines, as she's currently tied for 21st with a two-round tally of 9-over-par 153. Henley has carded scores of 75 and 78 to hold down a spot in the top-25. 
 
Freshmen Macy Robertson (77-80—157) and Caylyn Ponich (80-79—159) round out UVU's competitors at the conference championship, as they are respectively tied for 30th and 34th.
 
As a team, UVU dropped a spot to sit in fourth place with a two-round total of 21-over-par 597. The Wolverines have carded rounds of 297 and 300 and will enter Wednesday's final round just two strokes back of Seattle U for third (595) and 14 shots ahead of UT Rio Grande Valley for fifth (611).

"We had another good day today especially after another tough start. It turns out holes one, three, and six have the highest stroke averages," head UVU coach Dr. Sue Nyhus said. 
 
"Victoria had a breakthrough round making birdie on the final hole. Anna hung in there all day finishing 1-under on the last three. We are hoping for a better start and a strong finish," Nyhus added.

Grand Canyon leads the event with a 4-under-par 572 (290-282) while New Mexico State is two shots back with a 2-undere 574 (287-287). 
 
GCU's Payton Fehringer is the current individual leader with a 4-under-par 140 (69-71). Estrada will enter Wednesday just three strokes back of her.  
 
The 2021 WAC Women's Golf Championship will conclude on Wednesday. UVU will begin teeing off for the third and final round at 9:45 a.m. MT/8:45 a.m. PT. Live scoring can be followed by visiting GolfStat.com.
