Lobos come from behind to top Wolverines in opener, 9-4

Despite dropping Friday's series opener, nine different Wolverines recorded hits on the night led by a 3-for-4 outing from Mick Madsen.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico scored six runs in the sixth en route to earing a 9-4 come-from-behind victory over Utah Valley in game one of a weekend non-conference series on Friday night at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque.

With the Wolverines (9-40) holding to a 4-2 lead in the sixth, the Mountain West Lobos (10-23) managed to post the crooked number in the last of the sixth and later added an insurance run in the eighth on their way to recording the win. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Lobos.

Following a leadoff double from Alexander Marco in the second, Jake Plecas later drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right to give the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead.

The Lobos then struck back with a run of their own in the third on a solo homer from Willie Cano to tie the game at 1-1. But back answered UVU with two more runs in the fourth to regain a 3-1 advantage. Plecas continued to swing a hot bat as of late as he led off the frame with his fourth home run over UVU's last five games with a solo bomb to straightaway centerfield to make it 2-1. Mick Madsen followed with a single and later came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Garrett Broussard to make it 3-1.

UNM then got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-2, but back answered the Wolverines with a run in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 4-2. Madsen started the inning with a leadoff single and later came around to score on a two-out RBI triple to right off the bat of Broussard to give the Wolverines the two-run advantage.

With UVU starting pitcher Jesse Schmit pitching well on the evening and having allowed just two runs on two hits into the sixth inning, the Lobos managed to get to him as the first five men in the bottom of the sixth reached base. UNM would go on to score six runs on six hits in the sixth on its way to taking an 8-4 lead. Mack Chambers, Connor Mang, Cano and Adam Schneider all delivered RBI knocks in the big frame for the Lobos.

The Wolverines then got two runners aboard in the seventh, but UNM reliever Miguel Reyes Jr. managed to pitch out of it by striking out Drew Sims and getting Madsen to groundout to strand the runners. UVU was then retired in order in the eighth but threatened in the ninth when pinch-hitter Jeff Arens doubled down the third-base line with one away. He later advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded there, as Sims lined out to the pitcher to end the game.

UNM reliever Isiah Campa was credited with the win to improve to 2-2 on the season while UVU's Schmit was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-8.

UVU outhit UNM 13-10 on the night, as nine different Wolverines recorded hits in the ballgame. Madsen led the way by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Brandon Luna went 2-for-3 and Broussard went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a triple. Plecas also had another strong day at the plate as of late by going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a homer and a walk. Cano paced New Mexico by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Despite having the 13 hits on the night, UVU managed to strand 11 baserunners on the basepaths on the night.

The Wolverines and Lobos will continue the three-game non-conference series with game two on Saturday at 6 p.m. The two teams will then cap the weekend series on Sunday at noon. Both games can be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
