OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University head wrestling coach
Greg Williams has announced that Pleasant Grove High School product Alex Emmer has signed to wrestle for the Wolverines.
Emmer, who originally hails from Albuquerque, N.M., moved to Utah for his senior campaign and capped his 2020-21 prep season by winning a state championship while wrestling for Pleasant Grove High School. Emmer is a four-time state placewinner and was the top-ranked 138-pounder in the state of Utah in 2021 as well as the pound-for-pound second-ranked grappler in Utah this past spring. He will come to UVU this fall and will compete at 149 pounds for the Wolverines.
"Alex is a great addition to our program. He is a serious student in the classroom and on the mat," said Williams. "He has participated in quite a few practices with our RTC program. He's talented but also has a great work ethic and a desire to learn. It's also an extra benefit that he will be able to wrestle with his brother James. They are very close and a huge support to each other."
Emmer previously wrestled his freshman, sophomore and junior campaigns at Rio Rancho High School in Rio Rancho, N.M. He wrestled his way to a third-place finish at state in 2020 and a fourth-place finish in 2019. He also helped both Pleasant Grove and Rio Rancho to state team championships in 2021 and 2019, respectively.
Emmer, who has competed in club wrestling for NM Beast, NM Bad Boys and Sons of Atlas during the past few years, also played football in high school.
Emmer will join his older brother
James Emmer on the UVU wrestling squad. James, who also competes at 149 pounds, recently finished his second year and redshirt freshman season of competing for Utah Valley this spring.
