ARLINGTON, Texas—The Utah Valley women's soccer team nearly swept the Western Athletic Conference major postseason awards as
Heather Stainbrook was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year,
Jenna Shepherd was named WAC Defensive Player of the Year, and UVU head coach
Chris Lemay was named the WAC Coach of the Year.
It marks the first time in program history that Utah Valley has won three of the WAC's premier postseason awards in a single season. The Wolverines also had nine players named to the All-WAC teams. It marks the second-most players in UVU history named to the All-WAC teams.
Stainbrook and Shepherd were also named to the All-WAC First Team, along with teammates
Sydney Bushman,
Hannah Lee, and
Faith Webber.
Julianna Carter was named to the All-WAC Second Team, while
Haley Richardson,
Leah Wolf, and
Taylor Nelson earned Freshman All-WAC honors.
Heather Stainbrook, Jr., F – WAC Offensive Player of the Year / First Team All-WAC
Stainbrook earned the WAC's Offensive Player of the Year award and was named to the All-WAC first team after breaking the Utah Valley single season records for goals scored (13) and points (32) this season.
Stainbrook becomes the first player in UVU history to earn WAC Offensive Player of the Year honors. She earns First Team All-WAC honors for a second straight season and earns her fourth all-WAC honor of her career.
She ranked second in the WAC in goals (13), goals per game (0.68), points (32), and points per game (1.68). Stainbrook has recorded multiple goals in four games this season and is tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals this year.
Stainbrook became Utah Valley's all-time scoring leader with 28 career goals and all-time points leader with 73 career points, setting both marks last week in UVU's final regular season home games against Southern Utah and Utah Tech at Clyde Field.
Jenna Shepherd, RS-Jr., D – WAC Defensive Player of the Year / First Team All-WAC
Shepherd earns the WAC's Defensive Player of the Year honor for the second time in her career as she also won it in 2020. She receives her third straight First Team All-WAC honor.
Shepherd anchored the Utah Valley defense to six shutouts this season, including two shutouts last week that helped the Wolverines secure the WAC regular season championship. Shepherd helped the UVU defense limit opponents to only three goals in UVU's last six matches. Shepherd and the UVU defense have only allowed 72 shots on goal this season, just 3.7 per game. The Wolverines have given up just three shots on goal over its last three matches.
Despite her defensive role, the redshirt junior defender also helps offensively on set pieces as she has recorded two assists, six shots, and four shots on goal.
Chris Lemay – WAC Coach of the Year
Head coach
Chris Lemay earns his first WAC Coach of the Year honor after leading his team to its second WAC regular season title. Under Lemay's direction, the Wolverines have won two WAC Tournament titles and two WAC regular season championships.
He has taken his team to a pair of NCAA Tournaments and is the only coach in UVU history in any sport to win an NCAA Tournament game when UVU defeated No. 25 Memphis in the first round of the 2020 tournament.
Lemay's team finished regular season play with a 13-3-3 overall record and a 9-1-1 mark in WAC play this year. The 13 wins are the second-most wins in program history and his team is just one win away from tying the all-time UVU record for wins (14) in a season.
Utah Valley is one of the best offensive teams in the nation as the squad ranks third nationally in assists (54), fourth in goals (51), fourth in points (156), and eighth in scoring offense (2.68). The Wolverines broke numerous UVU single season records this season, including total assists (54), assists per game (2.94), and total shots (353).
The Wolverines played one of the toughest schedules in UVU history with four nationally ranked teams on its slate. UVU came out of those four games with a 1-2-1 record, which included a 4-2 road win over then-13th ranked BYU and a 0-0 tie against then-No. 23 UCF.
Sydney Bushman, Jr., D – First Team All-WAC
Bushman receives all-WAC honors for a second straight season as she earned All-WAC Second Team honors last season.
Bushman was impressive on the backline all season, helping the Wolverines to six shutouts, including four in WAC play. Bushman helped the Wolverines record an impressive 1.00 goals against average in league play as the team gave up just 11 goals over its 11 WAC matches. She also helped the UVU defense limit opponents to only 35 shots on goal in conference action, allowing teams just 3.1 shots on goal per game. The junior defender helped the Wolverine defense to six shutouts overall on the season. She also helped offensively with four goals and one assist for nine points, which ranks fifth on the team. She also had 12 shots with seven on frame.
Hannah Lee, Jr., MF – First Team All-WAC
Lee had an impressive first season with Utah Valley, leading the team with 11 assists, which is the sixth-most assists in the nation. She also ranks 10th nationally in assists per game at 0.58 per match. Lee also scored four goals to go along with her 11 assists for 19 points, which ranks fourth on the team. Lee ranked fourth on the team with 50 shots, including 15 shots on frame. She scored the game-winning goal in UVU's road win at Abilene Christian.
Faith Webber, So., F – First Team All-WAC
Webber led the WAC this season with 85 shots and ranked third in the conference in both goals (12) and points (31). She had an impressive four game-winning goals in wins over CSUN, California Baptist, Stephen F. Austin, and Tarleton. Webber led Utah Valley in shots (85) and shots on goal (44). She also ranked second on the team in goals (12) and second in assists (7). The sophomore forward recorded just the ninth hat trick in school history and the first since 2018 as she sparked an incredible comeback against California Baptist, helping UVU erase a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 on Sept. 30. Webber scored multiple goals in two matches this season, scoring three in the win over CBU and two in UVU's win over Southern Utah (Oct. 27).
Julianna Carter, Sr., F – Second Team All-WAC
Carter earns her second straight Second Team All-WAC honor, also earning the award in 2021. The honor marks her third overall All-WAC team. Carter helped the UVU offense with nine goals this season, which ranks third on the team. She also tallied six assists and ranks third on the team with 24 points. Carter has one game winner this season, lifting the Wolverines to a 2-1 road win at Grand Canyon (Oct. 2). Carter ranks fourth on the team with 34 shots and third in shots on goal (24).
Haley Richardson, RS-Fr., MF – Freshman All-WAC Team
Richarson played in all 19 matches for UVU this season. She made four starts and tallied eight shots with four on frame. She scored a goal in UVU's 6-1 road win at Tarleton (Oct. 23) and recorded two assists this season.
Leah Wolf, Fr., GK – Freshman All-WAC Team
Wolf has played eight matches in the box for Utah Valley, logging 525 minutes. She holds an impressive 0.86 goals against average and a .750 save percentage with 15 saves. Wolf holds a perfect 6-0-0 record in goal and has two combined shutouts.
Taylor Nelson, Fr., F – Freshman All-WAC Team
Nelson has played in all 19 matches for the Wolverines and has made six starts, including starts UVU's last four matches. Nelson recorded an assist in UVU's 5-0 shutout win over Southern Utah (Oct. 27) and another in UVU's 2-0 win over Utah Tech (Oct. 29). She has 10 shots with two on frame.
