Utah Valley drops heartbreaker in overtime at Wake Forest, 68-65

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.Justin Harmon scored 19 points and Le'Tre Darthard added 18 to lead Utah Valley in a heartbreaking 68-65 overtime road loss to ACC foe Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. 
 
Trey Woodbury knocked down a clutch shot to tie the game, 65-65, with three seconds left on the clock in overtime. Wake Forest's Tyree Appleby then hit a shot from three to give the Demon Deacons the 68-65 overtime win. 
 
Utah Valley falls to 2-2 on the season while Wake Forest improves to 3-0. Utah Valley led for 26 minutes in a game that produced 15 lead changes and 10 ties. 
 
Utah Valley opened the game with nine unanswered points to jump out to an 11-2 lead through the first five minutes of the game. Wake Forest responded right back with a 9-0 run out of the first media timeout to tie the game, 11-11, with 11:54 to go in the first half. Tied 13-13, Wake Forest threw down a dunk and then knocked down a three to go up by five, 18-13, at the 9:51 mark. UVU responded right back with Harmon scoring five straight points and Darthard hitting a shot from long range to go up 21-18 with 7:36 to play. Wake Forest then scored four straight to retake the lead 22-21 at the seven-minute mark before the Wolverines used a 6-0 run capped off by a Jaden McClanahan three to take a 27-22 lead with 3:35 to go. The Demon Deacons then used an 8-2 run the rest of the way to take a 30-29 lead into the break. 
 
Utah Valley outscored Wake Forest 9-4 through the first four minutes of the second half to take a 38-34 lead with 15:52 to play. The Wolverines held on to the lead through the next five minutes with Darthard and Harmon scoring buckets to give UVU a 42-40 advantage with 11:33 remaining in the game. Leading by just one point, 44-43, Harmon scored back-to-back buckets to spark an 8-0 run to give the Wolverines a 50-43 lead with 7:35 to play. Wake Forest came right back with an 8-2 run of their own to cut the UVU lead to just one point, 52-51, with 4:55 to go. Aziz Bandaogo hit three free throws to give the Wolverines a four-point, 57-53, lead with 3:37 to go. A pair of Wake Forest threes then tied the game 59-59 with just a minute to play. UVU's Woodbury couldn't get a shot to fall with 57 seconds to go and Wake Forest missed a shot at the buzzer to end the game tied in regulation, 59-59. 
 
Utah Valley scored the first four points of the overtime period to take a 63-59. Wake Forest came right back with four straight points to tie the game, 63-63, with 2:17 to play. Wake Forest's Apleby made a layup to give the Demon Deacons a 65-63 lead with 25 seconds remaining. Woodbury then drilled a mid-range to tie the game, 65-65, with three seconds to go. Wake Forest sent a full court pass that eventually reached Appleby who then knocked down a three from the left side to secure Wake Forest the 68-65 overtime win.
 
Harmon scored his 19 points on a 9 of 19 clip from the field. He also pulled down four rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals. Darthard scored 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting, including three shots from long range. 
 
Bandaogo was just one point shy of his third straight double-double with nine points and a career-high 17 rebounds. He also three blocks and a steal. 
 
As a team, Utah Valley shot 33.3 percent (25-75) from the field and struggled from three, connecting on a 12.9 percent (4-32) mark. Utah Valley outrebounded Wake Forest 53-43. UVU had six blocks on the night. 
 
Utah Valley continues play on the road as the team travels to Montego Bay, Jamaica to play in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic, Nov. 18-21. UVU will open the Jamaica Classic against Morgan State on Friday night at 5 p.m. (MT).
