PROVO, Utah — Larissa Dabb and
Everlyn Kemboi both set new school records as Utah Valley University wrapped up their indoor track & field opener on Friday at the BYU Indoor Invitational inside the Smith Fieldhouse.
Kemboi picked up right where she left off after becoming an All-American in cross country, breaking her own school record in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 9:31.37, shaving over four seconds off the previous best. Wolverine runners recorded the top seven times in the 3k, with Mazzie Melaney Preson (9:51.37) and
Madison Flippence (9:55.96) coming in next behind Kemboi.
Hannah Branch, now a former Wolverine athlete after finishing her collegiate career in the fall, was fourth with
Maggie Zwahlen (10:03.7),
Ari Trimble (10:13.59), and
Elizabeth Zwahlen (10:23.64) the next three in order.
Dabb set a new school record in the 300-meter race, finishing second overall with a time of 39.23 seconds, .32 seconds in front of the previous record that was held by Ashley Zulauf from 2017.
Ella Hopper was fourth (40.20) and
Kali McEuen finished in seventh (41.54).
Jason Hoffman and
Habtamu Cheney both brought home gold in their events. Hoffman won the mile with a time of 4:14.64 while
Adam Bunker was third after finishing in 4:19.71.
Jacob Egan placed fourth, less than three seconds behind Bunker with a time of 4:22.28. Cheney won the 3000-meter final in 8:18.14 with
Adrian Jones also finishing in the top 10, in eighth (8:47.97).
McEuen and
Paige Young were third and fourth, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles final. McEuen finished in 8.92 seconds, just barely in front of Young and her time of 8.94 seconds.
A day after winning the long jump,
Aaron Johnson took second in the 60-meter final with Utah Valley taking three of the top four spots. Johnson (6.73 seconds) was just .01 behind the winner and was followed by
Caleb Furnell (6.80) and
Mikhail Carvalho (6.86) in third and fourth, respectively. The trio also showed well in the 300-meter finals, with Furnell taking third (33.81), Johnson fifth (34.62) and Carvalho sixth (34.86).
Cameron Franklin also finished in the top 10, placing eighth with a time of 34.95 seconds.
Aiden Garnett placed third in the high jump, matching the top height of 2.10 meters.
Carter Cook was fifth and
Jeffrey Duvinston placed sixth with both hitting 2.05 meters. Utah Valley also finished second in the men's 4x320 finals.
On Thursday's opening day, Utah Valley also had three student-athletes take first place with Johnson's long jump win joining
Olivia Pixton (long jump) and
Joshua Clark (shot put) with gold finishes. The Wolverines will next compete on Jan. 12-14, again at BYU in a three-day event at Smith Fieldhouse.
