Wolverines fall in finale at San Francisco, 6-3

UVU tied it at 3-3 in the third, but USF scored a trio of runs over in the late innings to claim the finale and the series.

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco used three late runs to pull away from Utah Valley University en route to recording a 6-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco.

Utah Valley (2-6) came from behind to tie the game at 3-3 in the third and was led by Mitch Moralez, who went 3-for-4 on the day. Luke Keaschall had a homer in the late innings to help lead USF (5-3) to victory and take three of four from the Wolverines on the weekend.

"Our guys competed hard all weekend against a very good San Francisco team. It was great preparation for us as we enter WAC play next weekend. We have been preparing to play our best baseball during WAC play since August and are excited to get started Friday Night."

Trailing 2-0 heading to the second, Garrett Broussard started an early UVU rally by sending a liner to left-center for a double to move into scoring position. Later Drew Sims hit with two men on base and scored Broussard on a sharply hit one-hopper down the third base line for an RBI double. Moralez later drilled a liner up the middle, but USF's Keaschall made a diving catch to end the UVU threat.

San Francisco took a 3-1 lead in the second inning before UVU made a nice defensive play to end the inning. Trey Cutchen started a double play with a catch in foul territory and threw to Mick Madsen, covering second to retire Kyle Knell trying to advance to second.

The Wolverines had a two-out rally in the bottom of the third to deadlock the score at 3-all. Paul Vossen hit a sinking line drive to center field and stole second with Broussard at the plate. Broussard hit a liner to center that was ruled an error after dropping, allowing Vossen to score. Connor Hall tied the game with an RBI double to left field that rolled to the wall.

UVU got runners into scoring position with two outs again in the fourth. Moralez hit the first pitch he saw up the middle for a base hit. Cutchen moved Moralez to third with a double down the right-field line. The Wolverines were held scoreless in the inning, however, as the USF pitching staff got a foul-out to retire the side.

Keaschall gave USF a 4-3 lead with a home run over the left-field wall in the bottom of the fifth. In the seventh inning, the Dons added two more runs to take a late 6-3 lead.

In the ninth, Utah Valley brought the tying run to the plate after Moralez reached on an infield single and Cutchen worked a walk. Lance Santerre would get a strikeout and a groundout to end the ball game, however, to pick up his first save of the year.

Both UVU and USF saw great middle relief performances on the day. Josh Mollerus, who took the win (1-0) after throwing 4.0 innings and allowing two UVU hits with five strikeouts on the afternoon for the Dons, and Bobby Voortmeyer pitched well for the Wolverines but was tagged with the loss (0-2) after going 3.0 innings and allowing just one hit and one earned run.

UVU had four doubles as a team on the day and saw eight different players get hits in the contest en route to outhitting USF 10-4 on the day. USF was led offensively by Keaschall, who went 2-for-4 in the game and added two stolen bases. The Dons had Knell contribute a 2-for-3 afternoon.

The Wolverines will open WAC play with a three-game series beginning Friday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. MT at in-state foe Dixie State in St. George, Utah. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. and will close the opening conference series on Sunday at noon. The road trip continues March 7 and 8 with a short two-game midweek series at UNLV out of the Mountain West Conference.
