ST. GEORGE, Utah – Utah Valley University dropped game two of a weekend series, 12-1, to Dixie State University at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George on Saturday afternoon. Dixie State (6-4, 2-0 WAC) scored runs early in the contest, using an eight-run third inning to pull away from the Wolverines (2-8, 0-2 WAC).
The Trailblazers scored two runs in the first and added two more in the second on a Shane Taylor homer. In the third, Dixie State loaded the bases against
Cole Yocum before Matthew Ivancich went deep for a grand slam for the big blow in the frame.
Utah Valley had runners in scoring position in the fourth, with
Connor Hall drawing a walk against Brett Porthan.
Brody Ponti moved Hall to third on a base hit before
Paul Vossen drove in Hall home with an RBI double to right. It would be the lone run the Wolverines would score in the contest.
Porthan (2-0) picks up the win for Dixie State, going 6.0 innings, surrendering only four hits. Yocum (0-2) takes the loss for the Wolverines.

Trey Cutchen, Ponti, and Vossen had hits to lead UVU offensively. Taylor was 4-for-4 for Dixie State to lead the Trailblazers at the plate.
UVU and Dixie State will wrap up the series on Sunday, March 6 with a 12:05 p.m. MT first pitch from Bruce Hurst Field in St. George. Following the contest, UVU will head south to play UNLV in a two-game midweek series starting on Monday, March 7 in Las Vegas. The Wolverines return home next Friday (March 11) for the home opener against California Baptist with a 6:05 p.m. MT scheduled first pitch at UCCU Ballpark.
