LaMont and Drury punch tickets to nationals, four Wolverines advance to Sunday

Taylor LaMont and Haiden Drury have each secured a top-six finish and a trip to the NCAA Championships while Ty Smith and Evan Bockman will look to secure their spots on Sunday.

TULSA, Okla. – Taylor LaMont will make his fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships and Haiden Drury earned his first trip after both wrestlers secured an automatic berth at the Big 12 Championships at the BOK Center on Saturday. Both have clinched a top-six finish in Tulsa, with both matches to be decided on Sunday morning.

Ty Smith (141 pounds), and Evan Bockman (197) will both wrestle Sunday in seventh place matches and a chance to punch their tickets to Detroit in two weeks.

"We're super excited for Haiden to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championships and he definitely has an opportunity to earn a podium finish (at nationals). We're also pleased with Taylor for qualifying for the fourth time in his career and there's some things that we'll try to help him put together over the next couple of weeks so he can go out and perform like he did last year," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "Sunday's matches are super important for both Ty and Evan and we're looking for them coming out with lots of energy and ready to go tomorrow."

Drury, the sixth seed, took on No. 2 seed Kyle Biscoglia of Northern Iowa with a spot in Sunday night's 133-pound final on the line. The match was tied 2-2 after the opening period when Drury opened the second with an escape, Biscoglia's third stalling call of the match, and a takedown to take a 5-2 lead. He led 5-3 entering the third but a second stalling call on Drury and an escape forced overtime. Biscoglia earned the sudden victory win, and a trip to finals to face Oklahoma State's Daton Fix, with a takedown of Drury with 17 second left in the first overtime.

In his first consolation match, LaMont made quick work of Wyoming's Jake Svihel with a fall just 2:03 into the match. He was on the mat for even less time in his second match of the session with another fall (1:39) of Iowa State's Kysen Terukina, the No. 6 seed. He'll face Oklahoma State's Trevor Mastrogiovanni (the No. 4 seed) on Sunday for a spot in the third-place match.

Smith earned his second win of the championships with a 7-5 decision over Cody Phippen of Air Force. He gave up a takedown in the opening period but exposed Phippen's back in the second for four-point near fall and led 4-3 after two. An early takedown in the third clinched it for Smith, who also earned a riding time point.

Smith then faced Jacob Butler of Oklahoma in the second round of consolation matches and dropped a 9-4 decision and will wrestle for seventh place and an NCAA Championship berth on Sunday. The 2021 NCAA qualifier for the Wolverines Smith will face Carter Young of Oklahoma State, who he beat in a 6-2 decision in Saturday's pigtail round.

After falling to top seed and No. 2-ranked Stephen Buchanan of Wyoming in the quarterfinals, Bockman responded with a 12-4, major decision win over Air Force's Kayne Hutchison.

Bockman was in control throughout the match after picking up a pair of takedowns to lead 4-1 after the opening period. After entering the third with a 6-3 lead, he was able to secure the major with an escape, two more takedowns and riding time. Bockman finished with five takedowns in the match.

He then drew five-seed Rocky Elam of Missouri for a trip to the consolation semifinals where he fell in overtime, 4-2. Bockman will face Northern Colorado's Alan Clothier with an auto-bid at stake.

LaMont is leading the way for the Wolverines at the 2022 Big 12 Championships with a 3-1 record, while Smith is 2-2, Drury, 1-1, and Bockman 1-2.

Six other UVU grapplers competed for the Wolverines at this year's Big 12 Championship, but all had their runs come to a close on Saturday. Danny Snediker (165) led the group by going 1-2, while Cameron Hunsaker (149), Jaxon Garoutte (157), Jacob Armstrong (184), and Chase Trussell (285) all went 0-2, and Kekana Fouret (174) finished with an 0-3 showing.

As a team, UVU will enter Sunday's second day of action in 12th place with 30 points. Missouri is leading the way with 109.5 points, while Oklahoma is in second with 93.5 and Oklahoma State sits in third with 90.

Sunday's third session/medal rounds will begin at 11 a.m. MT/noon CT and will be streamed live on ESPN+. The championship finals will then close the event on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT live on ESPN2.
