SEATTLE – Utah Valley University dropped a midweek tilt to the University of Washington, 7-1, on Monday night at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.Â
Â
The Wolverines (12-21) had chances with runners on base, but a tough Huskies (16-15) pitching staff kept the Wolverines from coming from behind in this contest as 10 Wolverines were stranded on the base paths on the night.Â
Â
Coby Morales and AJ Guerrero reached base in the bottom of the second inning and later scored for the Huskies to give UW a 2-0 lead.Â
Â
The Wolverines responded in the top of the third.
Kyle Coburn hit a liner to left center and hustled into the second base, just ahead of the throw.
Mitch Moralez then bounced a ball past third base down the left field line to score Coburn to make it 2-1 following back-to-back doubles.Â
Â
The Huskies opened the game up in the bottom of the third with an RBI double from Will Simpson and then a single to score Morales to increase the Husky lead to 4-1.Â
Â
Utah Valley threatened in the fifth inning when
Cole Jordan hit a sharp single to centerfield to start the inning, and
Drew Sims worked a five-pitch walk to put two runners on. Washington made a pitching change, and Jake Enger came in to retire the next three Wolverine hitters to end the threat.Â
Â
Simpson hit a late three-run home run to increase the Washington lead to 7-1 to cap off a 3-for-4 night with four RBIs to lead UW.Â
Â
The Wolverines had a walk in the eighth to Madsen and a double by
Paul Vossen that went to the wall in right field. Following a UW pitching change, the Husky staff came up with a couple of big outs to keep UVU off the board.Â
Â
Copper Hansen drew a walk before Coburn was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base in the ninth before back-to-back strikeouts sealed the 7-1 Washington victory.Â
Â
Utah Valley had hits from Moralez, Coburn, Vossen, and Jordan in the game. Madsen reached base three times, and Coburn reached four times to lead the Wolverines offensively.Â
Â
Blake Zeleny had an outstanding outing for UVU out of the pen, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and no runs while punching out four in the middle innings to keep the UW offense silent.
Andrew Hauck added a hitless inning where he retired the side in order the eighth.Â
Â
Enger (3-0) picked up the win as he came in one inning in relief of starting pitcher Stu Flesland who went 4.0 innings, and allowed three hits to UVU hitters.
Cameron Scudder (0-3) takes the loss for UVU going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and two earned runs.Â
Â
The contest capped a weekend trip in Seattle in which UVU split four games. The Wolverines first won two of three from WAC foe Seattle U before dropping Monday's midweek at Washington.
Â
Utah Valley returns home to start the second round of WAC play against in-state rival Dixie State on Thursday, April 14 in the Old Hammer Rivalry.
