STOCKTON, Calif. – Utah Valley capped a nine-game over 11-day road trip in a big way with an 11-0 shutout victory over Pacific at Klein Family Field in Stockton, California on Monday afternoon.
Six Wolverine (17-35) pitchers combined to shutout the Tigers (14-35) for UVU's first shutout of the season and first since March 7, 2020.
Cameron Scudder started and tossed three scoreless frames and was followed by two scoreless innings of work from
Alex Karns.
Andrew Hauck,
Carson Brown,
Nick Sims, and
Josh Brown finished off the team shutout by each recording a scoreless inning of work.
The Utah Valley offense also had a big day, as eight players tallied hits led by a perfect 3-for-3 outing from
Kyle Coburn.
Copper Hansen also doubled twice and had drove in two runs and
Spencer Olsen belted out his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
"It was a total team effort. We had some great things for us offensively and on the mound," head UVU coach
Eddie Smith said. "It was a great way to end the road trip."
The Wolverines had an early chance to score as they loaded the bases with two away in the top of the second. Hansen started the threat with a two-out walk and Coburn and
Connor Hall followed with back-to-back singles to load them up. In his first collegiate start as an outfielder,
Cole Yocum then flew out to deep center the end the threat.
UVU then broke a scoreless tie in a big way with an eight-run fourth inning to take an 8-0 advantage. With
Brandon Luna on second following a single and a balk, he then came in to score the first run of the game on an RBI double from Hansen. Hall drove in the second run of the frame with a fielder's choice RBI and Hansen followed by coming home on a wild pitch.
Paul Vossen then plated Hall with an RBI single to right and
Mick Madsen followed with a picture-perfect squeeze bunt for an RBI single of his own to make it 5-0. With the bases loaded, UVU then scored another run on a passed ball and
Garrett Broussard capped the big frame with a two-run bloop-single to make it 8-0.
With the Utah Valley pitching staff still putting up zeros into the seventh, the Wolverine offense then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 10-0. Broussard started the frame by being hit by a pitch and he came around to score on Hansen's second RBI double of the game. Hall later added another fielder's choice RBI, as Hansen scored on the play for UVU's 10th run of the game.
In the eighth,
Spencer Olsen belted out his team-leading eighth home run of the season to the opposite field to extend UVU's advantage to 11-0.
The southpaw Scudder started on the mound and surrendered just two hits while striking out two over 3.0 innings of work. The freshman Karns was credited with his first collegiate victory (1-1) after allowing just one hit while striking out three over 2.0 innings. Hauck,
Carson Brown,
Nick Sims, and
Josh Brown completed the shutout by each tossing a scoreless inning of work. Pacific starter T. Stout was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on six hits over 3.0 innings to drop to 2-2.
Behind Coburn, Hansen, and Olsen's stellar offensive outings, Luna and Vosen also each recorded multiple hits on the day, as Luna went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Vossen 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
The Wolverines will now return home for their final WAC series of the season with a crucial three-game set against New Mexico State. UVU and NM State will open the three-game series on Thursday, May 19 at 6:05 p.m. with a spot to compete at next week's 2022 WAC Tournament on the line.
