SEATTLE and OGDEN, Utah – Utah Valley University saw a pair of school distance records shattered while the women's long jump record fell for the third straight week as indoor track & field competed at the Husky Classic at the University of Washington and the Wildcat Invitational at Weber State University.
Habtamu Cheney and
Everlyn Kemboi both set new records in the indoor 5k while
Kelsi Oldroyd regained the top mark in the long jump after seeing her record from Jan. 28 bested by
Krista Farley just last week. Utah Valley has seen eight school records fall so far this indoor season.
Cheney ran the first sub-14-minute 5,000-meter race in men's indoor history against a deep field at the Husky Classic inside Dempsey Indoor. He finished 11th in the race and bested his own top mark by nearly 10 full seconds with a time of 13:51.77.
Kemboi also became the first woman in program history to finish the indoor 5k in under 16 minutes, shattering her previous school record by over 25 seconds and taking sixth overall with a time of 15:48.98.
Mazzie Melaney Preston just missed the sub-16 mark, finishing in 16:02.67 for the No. 2 spot in the record book and beating her previous best by almost 12 seconds.
Madison Flippence ran the fourth-best time (16:34.95) and
Ari Trimble had the fastest time ever for a freshman, finishing the race in 16:53.75 for the No. 5 spot.
Also in Seattle,
Austin Hone ran the 3k in 8:11.07 to move to No. 2 all-time while
Adrian Jones—who holds the third spot in the top 10—just missed his personal best and finished in 8:13.07.
Kale Sharp now has the No. 5 mark in the record book after his 3,000-meter finish in 8:16.46.
Closer to home in Ogden, Oldroyd regained the No. 1 spot in the long jump in the school's top ten with her best mark of 5.75 meters while
Paige Young set a PR with the No. 9 mark of 5.50 meters. In the high jump, Aubrey Tasker bested 1.63 meters for her personal record at UVU, which puts her at No. 9 all-time. In the triple jump,
Taygin DeHart now owns the No. 7 spot after hitting 10.84 meters.
Emma Aldred ran the 55-meter hurdles in 8.29 seconds to take third in the event and move into fifth all-time at UVU.
For the men,
Jason Hoffman had the second-best mark at Utah Valley in the men's 800, finishing in 1:52.38 for second place at Friday's event.
Ryan Tenn and
Kade Thompson took the top two spots in the 55-meter race with Tenn (6.40) tying for the eighth-best time in the record book and Thompson (6.41) just behind him for the ninth-best in the top 10.
Seth Krauss,
Carter Cook, and
Jeffrey Duvinston swept the top three spots in the high jump, while
Porter Westerlind won the pole vault after hitting 4.90 meters.
Aaron Johnson won for the fourth time this season in the long jump with a mark of 7.63 meters. UVU also had five of the top six in the men's shot put, led by
Luis Diaz Bojorquez' best mark of 16.04.
Other personal records this week included
Elyssa Shaw (15.18m) and
Alyssa Logan (15.25m) in the weight throw.
Utah Valley is now scheduled to have next week off to prepare for the WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 24-25 at the Podium in Spokane, Washington.
