Wolverines secure split after 13-9 win over Lehigh

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball defeated Lehigh 12-9 on Sunday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark. Freshmen Cameron Rowe and Daniel Dickinson each had three hits in the game, with Garrett Broussard chipping in three hits. Jayse Burkett held the Lehigh (9-6) bats in check through six innings.

UVU struck first as Dickinson hit his second home run of the year to right field to lead off the game for the Wolverines. After, Burkett held Lehigh scoreless for two innings. Utah Valley jumped right back on the board, taking a 2-0 lead after doubles from Rowe and Calyn Halvorson.

The Mountain Hawks came back and scored two of their own runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Wolverines answered right back with three runs in the home half. Rowe led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give UVU a narrow 3-2 lead. Halvorson reached on a walk to put a runner on first and later stole second. Cutchen walked on a wild pitch and stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. Broussard delivered a double in the gap in left to clear the bases and put Utah Valley up 5-2.

The Wolverines added two more in the sixth after a one-out triple from Nate Bach. Rowe added an RBI single to center and made it 6-2. UVU loaded the bases after a single by Dickinson and a Patrick Mills walk. Halvorson grounded out but was able to score Rowe.

Lehigh gained momentum in the seventh, as they plated four runs to get within one at 7-6. Austin Watson came in from the bullpen and stranded the tying run on third base with a punchout. The Wolverines came right back and separated themselves from Lehigh. Broussard led off with a walk before Brandon Luna reached on an error. The runners moved up to second and third after a wild pitch, and Jordan singled through the left side to put UVU up 8-6. A sac fly from Bach extended the lead to 9-6, and eventually, it went to 10-6 after a single from Dickinson.

Utah Valley added some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Cutchen walked and moved to third on a single from Broussard. Luna added an RBI single to make it 11-6, and Jordan provided a triple to deep left center, allowing Luna to sprint home from first. A rundown ended the inning as Bach was caught but allowed enough time for Jordan to score to make it 13-6.

Lehigh rallied in the ninth inning with a three-run homer, but Watson got a strikeout before giving way to Devin Smith, who retired the game's final hitter on a strikeout looking.

Burkett improves to 2-0 on the year after throwing six innings, allowing two hits, and striking out six. His ERA now sits at 0.51 through his four starts this season.

Utah Valley closes the homestand on Monday, Mar. 13, with a 4:05 p.m. MT first pitch against Northwest Nazarene. UVU beat the Nighthawks 5-4 in Nampa, Idaho last week. The Wolverines will travel to Seattle U next weekend for the opening series of WAC play against the Redhawks in Bellevue.
