ST. GEORGE, Utah – Utah Valley defeated Tarleton 7-6 on Saturday night at Bruce Hurst Field. UVU (13-10, 2-2) drew 13 walks from the Tarleton (11-15, 1-3) staff.
Cole Jordan had a team-high four RBIs, including a three-run bomb.
Utah Valley scored first in the second inning after loading the bases after walks to
Trey Cutchen,
Garrett Broussard, and
Nate Bach. Jordan scored one on a fielder's choice, and a second run came in on a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Wolverines added two more in the fifth after Tarleton got on the board with a solo home run. UVU loaded the bases on walks before
Spencer Olsen walked to bring home a run to make it 3-1. Cutchen drove home a run with a liner off the pitcher's glove that skipped to the shortstop and put UVU up 4-1.
The Texans cut the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning before UVU added insurance runs in the seventh after singles from
Calyn Halvorson and Broussard put two runners on base. Jordan hit his second homer of the season to one of the deeper parts of the park to give UVU a 7-4 lead late.
Tarleton scored two late runs to make it 7-6.
Casey Anderson picked up his first save of the season, including striking out the side in the ninth for the Wolverines.
Logan Gerling went 5.2 innings allowing five hits and striking out four to pick up his fifth win of the year.
Utah Valley returns to the diamond on Mar. 28 with a 6:05 p.m. MT first pitch against BYU from UCCU Ballpark. The Wolverines will welcome Grand Canyon for a three-game WAC series that starts on Mar. 31.
