PORTLAND – Utah Valley dropped the final game of a weekend series to Portland on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field in Portland. The Wolverines (7-5) held an early lead before the Pilots (7-4) used a four-run sixth inning to take their first lead of the game and not look back.
Utah Valley scored first in the second after an error by the Portland first baseman allowed
Luke Iverson to score to put UVU up 1-0. The Pilots answered right back with a run in the home half of the second and third innings to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Wolverines used a three-run sixth inning to regain the lead at 4-2 after Iverson drew a walk with a full count and scored on the double from
Nate Bach.
Garrett Broussard put runners on the corners when
Cole Jordan reached on an error that allowed Bach to score. UVU ended the spurt with a fielder's choice from
Trey Cutchen.
Portland quickly answered with four runs of their own in the home half inning and capitalized on three extra-base hits to take a 6-4 lead into the late innings.
Utah Valley looked to rally in the seventh with back-to-back singles from
Patrick Mills and
Calyn Halvorson to start the inning.
Daniel Dickinson drove home one with a double to get UVU within one at 6-5. The Wolverines did not get the timely hit needed to tie or take the lead.
Broussard was 2-for-3 for UVU, and Dickinson added a two-hit game. Mills extended his hitting streak to ten games and has reached base in all 12 games of the year for UVU.
Jayse Burkett took a no-decision after tossing 4.0 innings on five hits and two strikeouts.
Utah Valley plays Monday, Mar. 6, at 3:05 p.m. MT in Nampa, Idaho, against Northwest Nazarene. UVU will host Lehigh for a four-game series beginning on Mar. 10 at 4:05 at UCCU Ballpark; this will be the home opener for UVU after the scheduled first home game against BYU was canceled.
