OREM, Utah – Utah Valley won the second game of a three-game season series, 6-5, against the University of Utah on Tuesday evening.
Brandon Luna finished 3-for-4, including an eighth-inning single, before scoring the winning run lifting UVU (17-15) past Utah (12-19-1). The two will meet in the rubber match of the season series on May 16 in Orem.
"We did a nice job battling the last two nights. There were some big pitches made on the mound paired with timely hitting, and we were able to come out on top tonight," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Utah Valley was down to their final out in the eighth inning when Luna singled through the right side.
Daniel Dickinson followed with a triple that scored Luna from first to give UVU a 6-5 edge heading into the ninth.
Ethan Fowlks came in and retired the side to secure the win to earn his fourth save of the year.
The Wolverines scored the first in the opening frame after loading the bases with a single from Dickinson, a walk issued to Mills, and
Luke Iverson was hit-by-a-pitch. A double play scored the first run of the game to put UVU up 1-0. The Utes came back to tie the game in the second inning on a fielder's choice.
The game remained tied until the fourth, when Utah took their first lead at 3-1 after a single and double brought home two. UVU answered in the fourth inning after
Matthew Schwarz started the inning with a triple to left center.
Nate Bach drove home a run on an infield grounder that was misplayed by Utah. Later in the inning,
Calyn Halvorson tied the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly.
The Wolverines saw themselves trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when
Patrick Mills tied the game on an opposite field home run to lead off the inning. UVU regained the lead later after
Luke Iverson scored on a groundout by
Matthew Schwarz.
Chase Hennessey (1-0) picked up the win tossing 3.0 innings of one-hit ball. Freshman
Colton Kennedy got the start going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits. He gave way to fellow Freshman
Austin Watson, who went a season-high 3.0 innings.
The Wolverines will play host this weekend to UT Rio Grande Valley in a three-game series beginning on Friday, Apr. 16 at 6:05 p.m. MT. The series continues on Apr. 17 at 2:05 p.m. MT and will wrap up on Sunday, Apr. 18 at 12:05 p.m. MT. Tickets for all games are still available.
