ST. GEORGE, Utah – Cole Jordan hit two home runs and knocked in six RBIs, while
Matthew Schwarz added six RBIs, as both tied the school record for the most RBIs in the game to lead Utah Valley over Utah Tech at Bruce Hurst Field. UVU (23-19, 9-9) scored the third most runs in program history in the 23-5 victory.
Josh Brown earned his first win of the season, going 3.0 innings allowing three hits, one run, and striking out four to limit the Utah Tech (10-32, 5-15) bats.
"It was a great effort by our lineup early. I thought
Josh Brown played a key role out of the bullpen for us in halting their offense. It sets up an exciting rubber match tomorrow," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
The Wolverines scored 11 runs in the first inning to climb out to an 11-0 lead. It is the first time they have scored 11 runs in an inning since Apr. 29, 2011, when they scored 13 runs against NYIT in the second inning.
UVU went through the entire order one time before the first out was recorded.
Burke Camper put UVU up 1-0 with a single before Jordan added a single to score one. When the ball was misplayed in right field, two more runs scored to make it 4-0.
Luke Iverson and
Calyn Halvorson added RBI hits to put UVU up 6-0.
A single from
Brandon Luna loaded the bases for Utah Valley, and they cashed in on a
Daniel Dickinson sac fly, while Schwarz tripled to bring home two more runs, giving UVU a comfortable 9-0 lead. Two more runs scored before the side was retired on a sac fly from
Patrick Mills and a second single from Jordan.
In the second, UVU plated two more runs as Dickinson doubled home Halvorson and Schwarz hit a home run to left center, putting UVU in front 14-1. In the third, Jordan hit his first of two homers of the day to make it 15-1, and
Garrett Broussard added an RBI double to put UVU in front 16-1.
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the fourth and looked to add more runs. They were limited to a bases-loaded walk to
Luke Iverson for the inning's only run.
Utah Valley added to their 17-4 lead in the sixth after singles from Broussard and Luna, Dickinson doubled to score Broussard. UVU added two more runs on a single from Schwarz to score Luna and Dickinson to make the score 20-4.
Jordan hit his second homer of the game in the three-run seventh inning to cap the score at 23-5. It marks the second WAC weekend series where he has hit two homers in a game and now ties the UVU lead with eight on the year.
Jordan and Halvorson each had four hits in the game, while Dickinson and Schwarz both added three knocks. The 23 runs scored are the most scored by UVU in the seven-inning contest.
