SACRAMENTO – Sacramento State came from behind to defeat Utah Valley on Friday evening at John Smith Field. The Hornets (16-14, 5-6) used a four-home run attack for the 7-5 victory over Utah Valley (15-14, 3-6).
Nate Bach finished 2-for-4 for UVU.
The Wolverines scored first after a pair of doubles from
Patrick Mills and
Luke Iverson to take a 1-0 lead after a half-inning.
They increased the lead in the second after
Trey Cutchen walked, and a single from
Cole Jordan placed runners at first and second.
Garrett Broussard placed a bunt toward third base and reached on a single. The throw to first went down the line and allowed a run to score and put runners at second and third. A wild pitch later in the inning brought home Jordan from third to make it 3-0 UVU.
Sacramento State scored in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run. The Hornet pitching staff held UVU scoreless until the sixth when Broussard scored from third as
Weston Peninger got caught in a rundown to go up 4-1. In the bottom half, the Hornets cut into the UVU lead, scoring two runs to make it 4-3, UVU.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, JP Smith hit a three-run homer to give the Hornets a 7-4 lead. The Wolverines looked to rally in the ninth. Bach hit a one-out single to center field and later moved up to second on a wild pitch.
Daniel Dickinson doubled to left field to bring a run home and make it 7-5.
Logan Gerling took a no-decision after throwing six innings and striking out eight. The win was credited to Austin Pettey (2-0), who threw the final three innings, allowing one hit and one run.
Ethan Fowlks (0-2) gets the loss going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs.
The Wolverines and Hornets play the series' final game on Apr. 8, with a Noon MT start scheduled. UVU returns to the state of Utah for a two-game home and home with Utah starting on Apr. 10 at Smith's Ballpark and returning to UCCU Ballpark on Apr. 11.
