ARLINGTON, Texas – Utah Valley split the two games played this afternoon against UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark. UTA (26-27, 16-14) won the completion of yesterday's game on a walk-off single before UVU (31-22, 16-12) won the final game of the series.
Garrett Broussard hit two home runs. The first came in the eighth inning of game one before going yard again in the fourth inning of the finale.
"Today's win was a total team effort. There were a lot of contributors, and the energy level was elite," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
GAME ONE
Utah Valley trailed 3-0 before coming back to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning.
Matthew Schwarz hit a home run to make it 3-1.
Nate Bach drew a walk before
Daniel Dickinson singled to put two runners on base. UVU loaded the bases after a walk was issued to
Patrick Mills.
Burke Camper delivered a single to plate two runs.
The Mavericks took a 5-3 lead as they moved into the bottom of the seventh inning. The rain and lightning suspended the game after a four-hour delay with two outs in the seventh. The two teams came back this morning to finish the game. Broussard's two-run homer game came in the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
UTA put a pair of runners on base before Cole Sumbler singled to left for a walk-off single to score Wilson Galvan.
Mitch Mueller threw 1.1 innings, allowing one hit. UVU starter
Logan Gerling went 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run.
Devin Smith (3-2) was credited with the loss despite 1.2 innings of two-hit ball.
GAME TWO
Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead after Camper led off with a double before moving to third and home on flyouts. Broussard recorded his first of three RBIs on a sac fly in the contest.
The Mavericks quickly tied the game in the home half of the third inning on a single by Ryan Black that was misplayed in left field and allowed a run to score. The tied game didn't last long in the top of the fourth inning as Camper walked before Broussard hit a two-run shot for his seventh dinger of the year. Schwarz bunted down the third base line for a hit before
Brandon Luna got drilled. A failed pickoff attempt got down the line and allowed Schwarz to score from second to make it 4-1 UVU.
Utah Valley added one in the fifth after singles from
Cole Jordan and
Patrick Mills placed runners on the corners. Camper flew out to left, allowing Jordan to score and increasing the UVU lead to 5-1.
Mills added a home run in the seventh for his team-high tenth homer of the season. UVU now has 58 home runs as a team, which is second in all-time in the D1 era. The 2010 team hit 79 homers for the program high.
The Wolverines added some insurance late as Schwarz hit his second homer of the series with a two-run shot to left center to give UVU a comfortable 8-3 lead.
The Mavericks started to rally in the ninth inning after back-to-back homers made it 8-6.
Reece Rodabaugh earned his second save of the year as he helped turn a 1-6-3 game-ending double play.
Casey Anderson (4-1) picked up the win after 5.1 innings with two earned runs.
Nick Sims pitched for the second consecutive day, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing three hits.
The Wolverines finish the regular season 31-22 and 16-12 in WAC games. They finished 9-4 against teams from Texas, with series wins in each series. UVU had series wins over first-time opponents Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and UT Arlington.
Smith said, "Texas is and has always been one of the premier talent pools for baseball in the country. You come down here, and it's an incredible game day atmosphere. Nobody expects a team from Utah to be able to compete with Texas schools, but it says a lot about our guys. The team came together with a dream and a vision to accomplish these sorts of things, and they have worked hard together to make it happen."
Utah Valley has clinched a spot in next week's WAC Tournament. They will play on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. MT. The full bracket and schedule are expected to be released later this afternoon.
