Utah Valley's Serrano joins El Salvador National Team for Gold Cup Qualifying

OREM—Utah Valley graduate goalkeeper Idalia Serrano has been called up to the El Salvador Senior Women's National Team as the team plays qualifying matches for the inaugural W Gold Cup. The El Salvador National Team camp and Road to W Gold Cup matches will run Sept. 17-24.

"Playing for El Salvador represents a lot to my family and I, but it's more than just that," said Serrano. "It means bringing hope to a country, giving young girls the opportunity to look at the Women's National Team and to dream. This is a commitment that I deeply treasure and whole heartedly embrace. I'm ready to give my all to it."

Serrano has played and started five matches in goal for the Wolverines this season. She has nine saves, a .474 save percentage, and one combined shutout.

The Mendota, California native played and started 14 matches for UVU in 2022, helping the team to a WAC regular season championship and a first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Serrano tallied 33 saves with three shutouts in 2022, compiling a 6-3-3 record in the box.

Serrano earned her first cap and start for the El Salvador National Team against Honduras on Nov. 19, 2021. She has been called up numerous times for training camps and competitions. Serrano now has 10 caps with El Salvador.

El Salvador will be playing in Group E of the League B classification on the Road to W Gold Cup series. The team will take on Nicaragua in its opening game on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Estadio Nacional de Futbol in Managua, Nicaragua. El Salvador will also play Martinique on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Las Delicias Stadium in La Libertad, El Salvador.

The first-place team of Group E, which includes El Salvador, Nicaragua, Martinique, and Honduras, will then advance to the W Gold Cup

The Road to W Golf Cup serves as the qualifier for Concacaf's W Gold Cup, the region's premier competition for women's senior national teams. The inaugural W Gold Cup will be played Feb. 17-March 10, 2024, in the United States.
