LINCOLN, Neb. – University of Nebraska defeated Utah Valley, 32-7 on Friday night at the Devaney Center.
Jack Forbes pulled off the night's upset with a 5-4 decision over No. 23 Harley Andrews.
Terrell Barraclough stayed undefeated with a major decision over No. 12 Bubba Wilson.
"I knew going into this dual that we were going to be tested at the highest level. All that I asked of our guys was to be willing to die on the mat and stay in the fight, which all 10 of our starters did," said UVU head coach Adam Hall. "Our goal will always remain the same: to prepare our team to win at the end of the year. The Huskers got off to a good start when returning All-American #4 Antrell Taylor (Nebraska) picked up a technical fall over
Ryker Fullmer to make it 5-0 Nebraska. They picked up two technical falls in the first three matches of the night with #7 Lenny Pinto (Nebraska) defeating
Mark Takara (UVU) by a 23-7 score in 5:58.
165-pounder Barraclough moved to 6-0 on the season with a major decision over two-time NCAA qualifier Wilson. An early takedown in the first period gave Barraclough a 3-0 lead. He increased his lead with an escape after choosing bottom to make it 4-0 before going up 7-0 when he took down Wilson before holding on for the 8-0 decision with a riding time point.
Trailing 10-4 heading to the 184-pound contest,
Caleb Uhlenhopp held his own against No. 3 Silas Allred, the 2023 Big Ten Champion who moved down a weight class to 184. He got out to a 6-1 lead before Uhlenhopp fought back with a second-period escape to make it 6-2. In the third period, he added five points in the period, but it was Allred who held on for an 11-7 decision.
The Huskers looked in control after picking up an 8-3 decision at 197 to take a 16-4 lead after five matches. Forbes came out after the ten-minute break and went up 3-1 when he scored on a takedown over No. 23 Harley Andrews. They each scored reversals in the second, but the UVU heavyweight held a 5-3 edge. He would hold on for the upset victory 5-4 despite being warned for stalling and Andrews narrowing it to a one-point bout.
Junior College transfer
Bridger Ricks trailed 4-0 in the second period to 2024 NCAA All-American Kaleb Smith before he scored a takedown of his own on a single leg after an impressive balancing act by No. 3 Smith, who hopped for close to one minute. After the bout was tied up with a third-period escape, the All-American came up with the win 8-5 in sudden victory.
Kase Mauger fell to the 2024 NCAA qualifier and No. 13 Jacob Van Dee via a major decision to put the Huskers up 23-7 before No. 4 Brock Hardy bested No. 27
Haiden Drury by a 4-0 decision after a scoreless first period. Hardy answered with an escape before adding a near fall and controlled riding time for the win.
The night's final bout went to No. 5 Ridge Lovett, who pinned Nebraska transfer
Tanner Frothinger.
The Wolverines will have their home opener on Friday, Nov. 15, against No. 3 Oklahoma State. Tickets for the dual are on sale now. UVU will then travel to face Duke, Presbyterian, and No. 8 NC State in North Carolina on Nov. 23.
