NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Utah Valley University picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon over California State University Northridge (CSUN) 6-5 at Matador Field.
Daniel Dickinson's two-run homer in the ninth put UVU (1-1) over the top, and
Cole Jordan made a diving catch with a CSUN (1-1) runner at second base to seal the win for UVU.
"That was a great team effort. We put together good at-bats all day at the plate.
Chase Hennessey set the tone on the mound, and
Ethan Fowlks was brilliant after him," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
The game was a pitcher's duel early, with Chase Hennessy throwing one inning before he gave way to
Ethan Fowlks, who went 4.1 innings on three strikeouts. He recorded seven ground ball outs while in the game.
Dickinson singled to start the game for the Wolverines in the first for the game's only hit until
Cougar Cooke singled for his first collegiate hit with two outs in the fifth inning. The Matadors took an early 1-0 lead on a safety squeeze by Shunsuke Sakaino.
Trailing 1-0, Utah Valley rallied in the sixth after Dickinson drew a four-pitch walk, and
Burke Camper was hit by a pitch to chase CSUN starter Ryan Halamicek. The Wolverines pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third before
Matthew Schwarz singled to bring home one and tie the game at 1-1. The next hitter,
Cole Jordan, hit his first home run of the year to make it 4-1. His 14th career long ball put him in sole possession of 14
th all-time in UVU history.
The Matadors scored one in the sixth and seventh to make it 4-3. In his UVU debut,
Ethan Brodsky finished with 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run. CSUN tied the game in the eighth inning, but the UVU gloves stepped up to prevent them from regaining the lead.
Nate Bach nearly robbed Jakob Simons of a home run as the ball stayed in play for a double.
After Utah Valley tacked on two in the ninth, the Matadors scored two to make it 6-5, but Jordan's diving catch kept the tying run from scoring and secured the save for
Reece Rodabaugh.
Utah Valley wraps up the series tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. MT first pitch against CSUN from Matador Field. There will be an audio-only broadcast for that game.
