Utah Valley splits two on Sunday with Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – Utah Valley University baseball closed out Saturday's suspended game for a 9-4 win before dropping the nightcap to Saint Mary's in ten innings. SMC (5-2) got a pair of home runs from Ryan Pierce in the win. UVU's (3-5) Calyn Halvorson finished the series hitting .667 (8-for-12).

"It's always exciting to start off the season. We found out a lot about our team on this trip. I'm excited to get back to work and keep improving," said UVU head coach Eddie Smith

GAME ONE
Utah Valley broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the second inning after a single from Halvorson. He moved up from first to third after a pair of groundouts and scored on a single from Matthew Schwarz to put UVU in front 1-0. The Gaels answered back, scoring two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, The Wolverines broke through and regained the lead, starting with a base hit from Broussard, and Isaac Lovings was hit by a pitch before Dickinson hit his second three-run blast of the day to make it 4-3. Utah Valley, later in the fifth inning, went back-to-back for the first time this year as Nate Bach and Halvorson each hit solo shots, increasing the lead to 6-3.

Lovings got in on the action with his third of the year in the sixth and the team's third of the game to go in front 7-3. Ethan Fowlks finished the day throwing 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, and recording four strikeouts.

The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the eighth as Broussard and Lovings reached base with two outs, and then Camper provided a single to plate both runners. Gray Bailey pitched in relief of Fowlks and went 1.2 innings of one-hit ball. The Gaels pushed a run across in the ninth, but UVU held on for a 9-4 win.

GAME TWO
The Wolverines trailed 2-0, heading to the top of the second inning when Schwarz walked to start the inning. After SMC had retired the next two hitters, Matt Olive tied the game with a two-run home run.

UVU starter Jackson Thomas went 2.0 innings and gave way to Nick Sims, who made his 54th career appearance while striking out five.

The Wolverines broke the tie in the fifth after Halvorson singled to center before Bach homered to right field to make it 4-2. After a walk to Luke Iverson, it was Cole Jordan who pushed SMC starter Jason Reitz out of the game with a double to left field. Schwarz added a single to make it 5-2 and Jordan later scored on a passed ball to increase the lead to 6-2.

The Gaels scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but UVU responded quickly as Olive was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a base hit from Halvorson to make it 7-3.

Jayse Burkett finished with 1.2 innings with no hits and no runs. Saint Mary's came back in the late innings with a pair of home runs from Ryan Pierce, including a walk-off in the tenth inning.

Utah Valley will return home to UCCU Ballpark for the home opener on Friday, Mar. 1 at 4:05 p.m. MT against Portland. The series continues with a game on Mar. 2 at 2:05 p.m. MT and Mar. 3 at 12:05 p.m. MT. UVU is scheduled to host WCC foe Gonzaga on Mar. 4 at 2:05 p.m. MT.
