Utah Valley suffers heartbreaker to Pacific, 6-5

STOCKTON, Calif. – Utah Valley University baseball lost 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon to the University of the Pacific. UVU (4-12, 1-2) had great pitching performances from Jayse Burkett and Robby Butenschoen, who held the Tigers (3-13, 0-0) scoreless for six combined innings, but Pacific rallied late for the win.

The Wolverines jumped on the board in the top of the first inning after a leadoff double from Daniel Dickinson. He came around to score on a balk to give UVU a 1-0 lead. Pacific loaded the bases in the first after a fielding error and a pair of hit batters. Chase Hennessey ended the threat with his second strikeout of the inning.

Pacific came back and took their first lead, at 3-1, with a three-run second inning, but they couldn't hold it as Utah Valley scored two in the third inning. It started with a double from Jayden Smith before UVU loaded the bases with walks by Dickinson and Burke Camper. The Wolverines scored their first run on a walk by Calyn Halvorson and tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly from Luke Iverson.

Utah Valley regained the lead in the fourth inning when Garrett Broussard walked and moved to third on Smith's second double of the game. Isaac Lovings drove the run home on a sac fly to put UVU in front 4-3.

Butenschoen went 2.0 innings while sending the Tigers down in order for two innings. He struck out the side in the third inning and finished with four strikeouts. Jayse Burkett went 4.0 innings, allowing one hit, and struck out four.

The Wolverines added a run in the seventh inning after Dickinson reached on a throwing error and advanced to second base. He stole third base before scoring on a single from Halvorson.

The Tigers rallied late for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 win. Dickinson finished the game 1-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs. Smith finished 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Utah Valley returns home for a three-game series against WAC foe Stephen F. Austin. The series starts on Friday, Mar. 15, at 4:05 p.m. MT.
