OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University baseball completed a sweep of Stephen F. Austin with a 12-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Garrett Broussard finished the day 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles, while
Nate Bach had his second inside-the-park home run and added a second dinger. The Wolverines (7-12, 4-2) finished the weekend with a program-high 12 home runs in the sweep of SFA (3-18, 0-6).
The Wolverines jumped on SFA starter Elian Balmaceda after
Daniel Dickinson walked, and singles by
Burke Camper and
Calyn Halvorson loaded the bases.
Luke Iverson made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field. UVU had two runners in scoring position for
Garrett Broussard, who homered to left field to make it 4-0.
The Lumberjacks looked to chip back into the game. A pair of one-out singles put runners on first and second. UVU reliever
Jackson Thomas got Sam Adams to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Wolverines took a 5-0 lead on a home run from
Jayden Smith in the second inning. The home run was his first as a Wolverine.
Thomas came up clutch again after a walk to Colton Griffin, where he forced Peyton Parker into a double play for the second one turned in the game. Utah Valley finished with three double plays in the game.
The defense turned to offense again in the bottom of the third when Broussard singled with two outs to extend the inning before Bach hit a liner to center field that got past the SFA centerfielder, allowing both Broussard and Bach to score and make it 7-0, Utah Valley.
The Wolverines added to their lead in the fifth inning after
Matthew Schwarz went the other way on a single, and Broussard launched a double to left center to make it 8-0. Bach took a 2-2 pitch out of the park for his second of the day to make it 10-0.
The UVU bullpen had a good day, with
Jackson Thomas pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and a strikeout, earning the first win of his UVU career.
Eli Sundquist finished with 1.2 innings on three strikeouts on five hitters faced.
Gray Bailey pitched the sixth inning, allowing one hit on four batters.
Nick Sims pitched the seventh in his 58
th career appearance.
The Wolverines picked up their second win in the series via the run rule in the seventh when Broussard doubled for the second time in the game. UVU took advantage of two fielding errors by SFA that allowed Smith and Lovings to score before a wild pitch allowed Smith to score from third for the 12-2 win.
Utah Valley earned their first sweep of 2024 and their first since last season against New Mexico State. The bottom third of the UVU lineup recorded eight of the 11 hits and scored eight of the 12 runs.
The Wolverines are back in action this week with a pair of games against Arizona State in Phoenix, starting on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. MT. The series will wrap up with a 2:00 p.m. MT start at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. UVU hosts Bushell University next weekend at UCCU Ballpark.
