SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Valley baseball fell 10-1 to the University of Utah on Monday night at Smith's Ballpark. Utah (19-8) pulled away with a seven-run sixth inning, which was too much for UVU (13-16) to overcome.
Burke Camper launched his tenth homer of the year, and UVU starter
Robby Butenschoen tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless ball.
The Wolverines threatened in the first inning with two outs after
Jayden Smith was hit by a pitch and later moved to second on a single to center field by
Cole Jordan. Utah Valley couldn't push a run across, though, as a flyout ended the inning.
Utah Valley got a runner into scoring position in the third inning when Camper hit a high fly ball into center field, but it glanced off the glove of the Ute fielder for an error that allowed him to sprint to third.
In the fourth inning, McBride was hit by a pitch to get the inning started and, after a perfect bunt by
Luke Iverson, put a pair of runners on for the Wolverines.
Butenschoen allowed only three hits and struck out two. He helped set the tone for the Wolverines and gave the offense multiple chances to get a lead. The Utes threatened in the fourth inning after Drake Digiorno and Kaden Carpenter singled, but UVU righty came up big with an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
Camper's solo home run bounced off the second fence in left field that went a projected 442 feet and was 107 mph off the bat.
Luke Kimmel came in to pitch the bottom of the fifth inning and won two battles against left-handed bats. The Utes got a run back on a single by Kai Roberts to tie the game at one.
The Utes didn't waste much time getting back on the board, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead. They added one run in the seventh and eighth innings for the 10-1 win.
Utah Valley will play (RV) Utah tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. MT at UCCU Ballpark. They will remain at home for the Old Hammer Rivalry and will welcome Utah Tech starting Friday, Apr. 5, at 6:05 p.m. MT. The series continues on Apr. 6 at 2:05 p.m. MT and will wrap up on Apr. 7 at 12:05 p.m. MT.
