EDINBURG, Texas – Utah Valley University defeated UT Rio Grande Valley, 8-6 in ten innings on Saturday night at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. UVU (18-18, 9-5) scored two runs in the tenth on a single from
Garrett Broussard to defeat UTRGV (17-14, 7-7). It marks the first extra-inning win since 2021 when the Wolverines beat the Vaqueros also in Edinburg.
"That was a resilient team effort in an incredible environment. There were 6,000 fans and one of the best college baseball environments I have ever experienced. It was great to see so many players rise up in clutch situations," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
The Wolverines looked to get the offense going in the third inning after
Matthew Schwarz singled, but a double play quickly put the inning near its end. It didn't stop UVU, though, as
Burke Camper singled with two outs and advanced to third after a single by
Calyn Halvorson. The run scored after Halvorson broke for second, and Vaquero catcher Steven Lancia faked a throw to second and fired wide to third base to allow Camper to score.
The game's starting pitchers had a duel going into the seventh inning. UVU's
Mitch Mueller pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out six. Zach Tmejland of UTRGV tossed 111 pitches over 7.0 innings and struck out eight hitters.
Cole Jordan broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a one-out home run that went around the foul pole in left field. It is his ninth home run this season and 22
nd for his career to move into a tie for sixth place with teammate
Daniel Dickinson.
UTRGV scored a run in the seventh inning after loading the bases against Mueller and
Nick Sims. Rudy Gonzalez pinch-hit and was hit by a pitch to tie the game.
The relatively quiet game so far would turn more interesting, starting in the eighth inning when UVU put the leading run on base when Camper was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Utah Valley loaded the bases after Halvorson and
Nate Bach reached base.
Joe McBride entered the game as a pinch-hitter and drilled a grand slam to put UVU up 6-2.
The Vaqueros scored four runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning, and were tied heading into the ninth inning.
Dickinson reached in the top of the ninth inning with a one-out walk before stealing his 22
nd base of the season to break Nick Connor's record of 21. He is now 22-22 this season and was in scoring position to give the Wolverines the lead. A strikeout ended the threat for UVU.
Eli Sundquist had a clutch performance, going 2.1 innings with a big final out in the eighth inning before throwing a three-up and three-down with two strikeouts. In the tenth inning, Bach and Lovings walked to put a pair of runners on base, and then, after a double steal, they both moved into scoring position. Broussard then delivered a ground ball past UTRGV shortstop Kade York to score two. Sundquist gave up a pair of hits but responded with a flyout and a game-ending strikeout.
UVU worked nine walks as a team, with Camper and Schwarz each drawing two walks in the game. Broussard had his tenth multi-RBI game in the contest, which ties him with Dickinson for the team lead. Sims made his 65th career appearance in the win for Utah Valley. He is one short of Logan Hold for eighth all-time in UVU history.
