OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball dropped a Saturday afternoon contest to UT Arlington 9-4 at the UCCU Ballpark. UTA (17-22, 12-8) pulled away with a four-run ninth inning in the victory.
Calyn Halvorson and
Cole Jordan both finished 3-for-5 in the game.
Daniel Dickinson broke the program's all-time steals record with his 35th career stolen base.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Wolverines got on the board with a pair of one-out extra bases, starting with a triple from
Daniel Dickinson before
Burke Camper doubled to tie the game at 1-1. UVU took their first lead after a single through the middle by Halvorson, before later loading the bases after singles by Jordan and
Nate Bach, but UTA starter Calyon Dygert got a pair of outs to end the threat.
The Wolverines used a pair of walks to push a run across in the fourth inning when
Garrett Broussard and Camper drew walks in the fourth inning. An infield single from Halvorson allowed a run to score on a late throw from second base and heads up base running by Broussard.
The Mavericks got a run back in the fifth to make it 3-2 before the bats came alive, and they took their first lead with a three-run sixth inning to go up 5-3.
UVU's
Mitch Mueller tossed 5.0 innings and struck out five during the game.
Eli Sundquist tossed 3.0 innings in relief to add four strikeouts.
Utah Valley looked to rally late in the game, starting in the seventh inning after Jordan singled through the right side and Bach singled to center to put runners on the corners.
Luke Iverson picked up an RBI on a groundout to short that made it 5-4.
The Wolverines and Mavericks will wrap up the series tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. MT. The game will air on WAC International. Utah Valley hits the road next weekend for a three-game series at WAC leader California Baptist before playing Utah Tech on Apr. 29.
