RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah Valley University defeated California Baptist University 8-7 in 12 innings on Sunday afternoon at Totman Stadium. UVU (22-22, 13-8) broke the tie in the 12
th on
Burke Camper's 17
th home run.
Ethan Brodsky pitched 4.0 innings to earn his first win at UVU over CBU (28-16, 14-7).
"That was a great battle.
Ethan Brodsky did a great job in relief, and it was another solid effort by the lineup to score a lot of runs," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Chase Hennessey set the tone early for the UVU pitching staff, pitching the game's first two innings. He allowed a first-inning double to Michael Carpentier but did not allow a run in his appearance. In the second inning, he retired the Lancers in order with two of his three strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.
The Wolverines threatened for the first time in the fourth inning when
Burke Camper was hit by a pitch. They later recorded their first hit of the game, a single by
Calyn Halvorson. UVU loaded the bases four times in the game, the first coming in the fourth, but they could not score a run.
Robby Butenschoen followed Hennessey's performance with two innings, allowing two scattered hits and one strikeout.
Eli Sundquist came in for the fifth inning, and while CBU had base runners reach, he quickly recorded a strikeout and a flyout to keep them off the board.
The Wolverines broke the tie in the sixth inning, loading the bases after Camper's single and walks to
Nate Bach and Halvorson. Iverson recorded his sixth RBI of the series when a pitch hit him to make it 1-0.
UVU went up 3-0 in the seventh inning when they used some two-out magic that started with a walk to Camper before
Cole Jordan launched his tenth homer of the year over the left-field wall.
The Wolverines broke the game open in the eighth inning after a home run from Iverson made it 4-0 Utah Valley. The two outs magic struck again, starting with singles by
Matthew Schwarz and Dickinson before Camper doubled off the right field, netting for a ground-rule double to make it 5-0, UVU. The inning continued after Jordan was intentionally walked, and Bach was hit with the bases loaded to make it 6-0 with six defensive outs remaining.
The Lancers chipped away at the UVU lead by scoring one in the eighth to cut their deficit to 6-2. The lead would be extended to 7-2 in favor of Utah Valley on a solo home run off the bat of
Garrett Broussard in the ninth inning. CBU wouldn't go quiet as they tied the game in the ninth inning at 7-7 to force extra innings.
Ethan Brodsky came in and tossed three clutch innings in extras. In the tenth inning, when the Lancers had runners on first and second, he forced an inning-ending double play to take the team to the 11
th inning. The Wolverines had base runners in the tenth and 11
th innings but could not get the leading run across.
CBU had two runners on base with one out in the 11
th with WAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year Mitchel Simon at the plate, who fouled out before a groundout ended the threat. The stage was set for UVU as Camper led off the 12
th inning with his 17
th homer of the year to make it 8-7 in favor of Utah Valley. Camper is now second place for home runs in a single season; he needs one to tie Goose Kallunki for first all-time. The Wolverines kept the pressure on with a single from Jordan before loading the bases with walks to Halvorson and Broussard before a strikeout ended the threat.
Brodsky back on the bump in the 12

Iverson finished the series with a total of nine RBIs for UVU, while Camper reached base 14 times in the series and had a .778 on-base percentage.
The Wolverines will travel to Saint George and play a non-conference game against the Trailblazers on Monday, Apr. 29, at 4:05 p.m. MT. They will return home for a four-game homestand beginning with a three-game series with Seattle U on Friday, May 3, at 6:05 p.m. MT.
