OREM, Utah—Utah Valley University completed the series sweep of Utah Tech with a 15-5 victory in eight innings. The win gives the Wolverines (16-17, 8-4) their second WAC sweep of the season and third home sweep.
Burke Camper finished 2-for-4 with a home run and a grand slam while driving in six runs in the win over the Trailblazers (8-22, 6-9).
"That was a complete team effort this weekend. The execution wasn't perfect but the energy was great and allowed us to play with a championship caliber relentlessness. It is a big step for this team and we need to continue to get better," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Utah Tech scored first with a pair of first-inning runs on a double by catcher Hank Dodson, giving the Trailblazers their first lead of the series at 2-0 after a half-inning. UVU answered right back with a run of their own in the first when
Daniel Dickinson and Camper drew two of Utah Valley's 12 walks in the game. They scored when the tandem tried to pull off a double steal, but Camper was caught stealing with Dickinson scoring.
The Wolverines stole the lead in the second inning after Utah Tech added a run to go up 3-1. They loaded the bases with singles by
Nate Bach and
Cole Jordan before loading the bases when
Garrett Broussard was hit for the first of three times in the game.
Isaac Lovings made it 3-2 with an RBI single before a passed ball scored Jordan to tie the game at 3-3.
Dickinson gave the Wolverines the lead with an RBI single to right field, making it 4-3. Utah Tech looked to have an inning-ending double play, but a miscommunication of who was covering second base caused the pitcher to throw the ball away, allowing multiple runners to advance to put UVU up 5-3 before Dickinson and Camper caused havoc on the base paths with a run scoring on a rundown for a 6-3 lead for UVU.
Jackson Thomas settled in and sent the Trailblazers down in order in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. He earned his second win of the season after going five innings, allowing three hits and three runs and striking out six.
The Wolverines started the bottom of the fifth inning with four hit batters on four pitches to make it 7-3. They continued to apply pressure with the bases loaded when
Matthew Schwarz's ground ball brought home Bach to make it 8-3. UVU wasn't done yet as Dickinson drew a walk to load the bases, and then Camper walked to increase the lead to 9-3.
The Trailblazers chipped away in the sixth, loading the bases and looking for a big inning. Jack Walker provided a two-run double off
Nick Sims to bring them back to 9-5, but Sims stayed strong and struck out Petey Soto Jr. to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Utah Valley went back-to-back with a Dickinson homer to left field, followed by Camper hitting one out to left to make it 11-5. It is the second time this season that UVU has had hitters go back-to-back, Bach and Halvorson teamed up earlier this season at Saint Mary's.
Utah Valley capitalized on walks and a hit batter in the eighth inning to load the bases with Broussard, Schwarz, and Dickinson reaching. Camper then fell behind in the count after taking a strike but worked the count back in his favor with three straight balls. He then hit a loud grand slam over the center field fence to give UVU a 15-5 win.
Dickinson finished 3-for-3 with four runs, two RBIs, and three walks. Jordan added a 2-for-3 day with a pair of runs scored. UVU has now drawn 12 walks twice this season, matching its season-high at BYU on Mar. 25.
The Wolverines will stay home and play a midweek game against Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, April 9, at 4:05 p.m. MT against the Nighthawks. UVU returns to WAC play this weekend with a three-game series in Edinburg against UT Rio Grande Valley.
