OREM, Utah – Utah Valley fell in the regular season finale to Grand Canyon, 16-5, on Saturday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
Garrett Broussard finished 2 for 4 in the game while tying the school record for most games played with his 221
st contest.
Matthew Schwarz added two RBIs to aid the UVU (28-27, 18-12) offense. GCU (34-21, 23-7) used a steady attack to build an early lead for the win.
"It was great to celebrate our seniors who have all done so much for our program. We are excited to get started with the postseason next week in Mesa," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Utah Valley trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning before they looked to tie the game and loaded the bases against GCU starter Daniel Avitia as they took advantage of two hit batters and a single to left by
Cole Jordan. The Wolverines were not able to score in the first inning.
Broussard started the bottom of the second with a single through the right side and moved to second a grounder. Dickinson then bunted and reached first to put two runners on base, but Garrett Ahern stayed strong and ended the threat with a strikeout.
The Wolverines continued to get base runners in the third and fourth innings, with
Calyn Halvorson reaching on an error in the third inning and
Isaac Lovings reaching on a single in the fourth.
They remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Camper walked to start the inning, and Halvorson recorded a single to right center to put runners on the corners. UVU loaded the bases and forced a pitching change when a pitch hit Jordan. The Wolverines' first run scored when Wyatt Quinn drilled
Nate Bach to make it 10-1 GCU. They added their second inning run when
Jayden Smith walked to make it 10-2. Broussard hit a grounder that brought home a run, but the Lopes defense turned two on the play before the inning ended with a 10-3 GCU lead.
The Wolverines got something going in the bottom of the seventh inning against Nathan Ward. It started when senior
Lucas Piper singled with one out in the seventh inning before Broussard capped his Senior Day with his second hit. Schwarz came through with a triple to right center field to score both Piper and Broussard to make it 16-5.
