OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University baseball dropped a midweek game on Tuesday night at UCCU Ballpark to Brigham Young University, 4-2. UVU (25-24) recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts of BYU (19-26) hitters while holding them to only four hits in the game.
Cole Jordan extended his hitting streak to 14 games, with
Daniel Dickinson reaching base for the 20
th consecutive contest.
"That was a good battle. It is great to see the way this matchup brings out the baseball community in the region," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Colton Kennedy made his third start of the season and found an early groove when he struck out the side in the top of the first inning and struck out Brock Watkins to start the second inning for his fourth consecutive strikeout. He sent down the Cougars in order in his first two innings of work to set the tone for the Wolverine staff.
BYU broke through in the top of the third after walks to Ryker Schow and Luke Anderson before Easton Jones homered to center field to put the Cougars in front 3-0. The Wolverines turned to senior
Nick Sims, who came up with a pair of strikeouts to end the third inning before starting the fourth with two strikeouts. He finished the game by matching a season-high five strikeouts, which was one off a career-high.
The Wolverines recorded their first hit in the fourth inning when Jordan doubled to left center to put a runner in scoring position. He hustled home to make it 3-1 on a single from
Luke Iverson. BYU did not waste any time getting the run back as Jones tripled to make it 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning against reliever
Ethan Brodsky.
Isaac Lovings reached base for the 18
th consecutive game with a single down the right-field line that was just out of the reach of the two infielders for BYU. Dickinson worked a five-pitch walk to bring the tying run to the plate, and
Burke Camper delivered with a single to left field to cut the Cougar lead to 4-2. Hayden Coon retired Jordan with the tying run on the base in the fifth.
UVU threatened in the sixth inning, as Bach was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but BYU turned a 5-6-3 double play with the shift on against Iverson for two key outs. The double play may have saved the game or at least the lead, as
Jayden Smith tripled to left center, but the bases were empty.
In the eighth inning, the Cougars looked to add some insurance runs, but this time, the UVU infield came up with a double play going around the horn, which saved a run or two when Watkins doubled to left center. The Wolverines threatened in the bottom half with a one-out double from Bach, but they stranded him.
The Wolverines had one more rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lovings reached when he was hit by a pitch with one out, and
Cougar Cooke reached when he was hit. The game ended on a diving catch by Cooper Vest, who quickly threw to first to double off the runner at first.
