LARAMIE, Wyo. – Utah Valley University fell on Friday night to Wyoming, 25-10, inside the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Bridger Ricks,
Kase Mauger, and No. 4
Terrell Barraclough all earned victories for UVU (5-6, 1-3). Wyoming (6-5, 1-2) came from behind to win the dual.
"I take this loss upon myself. I did not prepare our team enough to win tonight. We ended matches strong but gave up the first takedown in eight of our ten matches. We were aggressive throughout but came out on the wrong end of some scrambles. We will address our flaws and attack them for next week," said UVU head coach
Adam Hall.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a brother versus brother matchup went to
Bridger Ricks. He trailed 1-0 after the second period before tying it up in the third period with an escape. Garrett Ricks took a 2-1 lead after a penalty point was awarded following a stalling call. The bout swung in UVU's favor with a takedown in the final period.
Mauger jumped out to an early 4-2 lead over David Saenz with a takedown and escape before pulling away with four more points in the second period to take a commanding 8-2 lead before a scoreless final period made it a 9-2 decision. The UVU redshirt junior earned his 13
th victory for the season.
The Cowboys responded and earned a decision at 141 from Cole Brooks before No. 21 Gabe Willochell picked up a major decision, and No. 15 Jared Hill won by decision to take a 10-6 lead in the dual.
Utah Valley needed another swing in momentum with No. 4 Barraclough coming up onto the mat. He opened up an early 8-1 lead with a pair of takedowns before the end of the first period. The bout was well in control, and the lead continued to grow in the second period with four more points before adding a pair of takedowns in the final period for the technical fall.
Barraclough has been on a tear in his last nine matches, winning his last nine by a combined score of 70-6. Wyoming's Cooper Voorhees scored the most points since his only loss of the season to Jack Thomsen of Northern Iowa. The UVU senior pushed his dual record to 9-0 this year.
The dual was tied at 10-10 after the Wolverines were penalized a point, but the Cowboys took advantage of this by winning the night's final four matches to seal the victory, including a victory by pin at 197 by No. 10 Joey Novak to the dual win and Wyoming's first in Big 12 competition.
Hall said, "I love this team. I love that we have adversity to manage and are testing our mental and physical fortitude, especially as we continue our road swing in the Dakotas."
The Wolverines will be on the road for one final weekend during their Big 12 dual season when they travel to South Dakota State on Jan. 31 at 6:00 p.m. MT before closing the trip with a contest at North Dakota State on Saturday, Feb. 1.
