ARLINGTON, Texas — Utah Valley graduate forward Faith Webber and sophomore defender Kate Shirts have been named the Jersey Mike's A Sub Above Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Webber, from Grand Blanc, Michigan, scored a brace in Utah Valley's 7-1 victory over California Baptist on Friday night at UCCU Stadium. She netted the go-ahead goal in the 33rd minute with a composed finish inside the box and added her second in the 56th minute on a one-touch strike. Webber led all players with six shots, two on frame, and helped pace a Wolverine attack that scored a season-high seven goals. The performance kept UVU unbeaten in WAC play and moved the Wolverines to 7-4-1 overall and 3-0-0 in league action.
Shirts, from Orem, Utah, played 78 minutes and was a key two-way contributor in the win. She equalized in the ninth minute with a header off a corner kick from Sierra Pennock—her second goal of the season—and anchored a back line that limited CBU to seven total shots and three on goal while helping UVU control nearly 60 percent of possession. Her work on both ends set the tone for the Wolverines' dominant performance.
With this week's honors, Utah Valley has collected 10 WAC weekly awards this season: five Offensive Player of the Week nods, three Defensive Player of the Week honors, and two Goalkeeper of the Week recognitions. UVU has produced at least one honoree in six of the season's eight weeks and multiple honorees in four of those weeks.
Up next, Utah Valley plays at Utah Tech on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. MT in St. George, before traveling to Southern Utah on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
