CORVALLIS, Ore. —
Haiden Drury picked up a ranked win in overtime, but Oregon State won seven of 10 matches to beat Utah Valley 25-9 in a non-conference dual Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
The Wolverines (1-1) also got victories from No. 12
David Evans and
Jack Forbes.
"I was very frustrated with our effort tonight. We wrestled a team that brought the fight in all 10 matches and kudos to them. That is what we expect from our team," Utah Valley coach
Adam Hall said. "The highlight of our dual was
Kael Bennie going toe-to-toe with a world champion and top-10 ranked guy in the country and losing last second. Our fans will see a different team represent us against Cal Baptist on Thursday."
The dual opened with No. 27
Bridger Ricks facing No. 17 Maximo Renteria, the first of three bouts between ranked opponents. Renteria earned a first-period takedown and pulled away in the third for an 11-1 major decision. At 133 pounds,
Geronimo Rivera secured the opening takedown against fellow freshman Manny Saldate. Rivera led 3-1 after the first period, but Saldate tied it in the second and later scored the decisive takedown with 30 seconds left to win 6-4 and put the Beavers ahead 7-0.
Drury, ranked No. 25 by FloWrestling, went to sudden victory with No. 22 Nash Singleton at 141. Drury finished the bout with a takedown just over 40 seconds into overtime to improve to 4-1 on the season. Evans, ranked 12th, earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over Noah Tolentino at 149. Tied 1-1 in the third period, Evans scored the bout's only takedown and held on to pull Utah Valley within 7-6 through four matches.
Oregon State then won five straight to pull away. Joel Adams beat
Mark Takara 7-3 at 157, followed by Keller Rock — son of former UVU assistant KC Rock — earning a 17-4 major decision over freshman
Zyon Trujillo at 165. At 174, Matthew Olguin scored a 21-6 technical fall over
Tanner Lofthouse, and No. 28 TJ McDonnell topped No. 32
Caleb Uhlenhopp 12-5 at 184.
At 197, Bennie pushed No. 9 Justin Rademacher to the final second before the Oregon State wrestler scored a takedown with one second left for a 4-1 win. Rademacher won a U20 world gold medal at 97 kilograms in August. Forbes closed the night with a 7-2 win over Charley Hastriter at heavyweight. He secured an early takedown and added another late to seal the victory.
Utah Valley resumes competition Thursday in its Big 12 opener at California Baptist. The dual begins at 6 p.m. PST and will stream on FloWrestling.
