SAN JOSE, Calif. – Utah Valley baseball lost 4-3 on Saturday afternoon to San José State at Excite Ballpark.
Colton Kennedy tossed four innings with four strikeouts in his second for UVU (2-5), as
Landon Frei and
Brody Block each finished with two hits. SJSU (5-1) scored three runs in the ninth inning.
The Wolverines got on the board with the first hitter of the game;
Luke Iverson homered to left field to make it 1-0. They added to the lead in the second, starting with a one-out walk to
Jayden Smith before
Joseph Barnhardt singled to put runners on the corners. The run scored on a throwing error by the SJSU catcher that allowed Smith to score.
Utah Valley looked to break the game open in the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Block and Smith, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. They moved into scoring position following a passed ball. Barnhardt recorded his second RBI on a groundout to make it 3-0.
Kennedy was tough on the Spartans in his second appearance of the season. He retired the first seven hitters he faced before allowing his first runner to reach on a hit-by-pitch. The right-hander did not allow his first hit until the fourth inning. In the third and fourth, he managed to keep San José State off the scoreboard.
Utah Valley turned to the bullpen in the fifth inning with lefty
Carston Herman. The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run from Jake McCoy. Herman settled in nicely, putting up no runs until the ninth inning. He finished the day going 4 2/3 innings allowing five hits, and four strikeouts.
