GREELEY, Colo. – Utah Valley baseball completed the five-game series sweep of Northern Colorado, 17-10, on Monday afternoon at Jackson Field.
Dominic Longo II led UVU (9-8), going 5-for-6 at the plate with a home run and 4 RBIs as UVU pounded out 17 hits to score their 17 runs.
Nate Bach,
Jimmy De Anda, and Longo II all recorded multi-hit games, with five having at least two RBIs in the contest.
The Wolverines plated three runs in the first inning, all scoring with two outs after
Mason Strong worked a walk before stealing second base, followed by a single from
CJ Colyer, who moved to second on the throw home to make it 1-0. The inning with an RBI double on a 1-1 count from
Nate Bach before Longo II recorded his first of four RBIs with a single.
In the second, they got the leadoff hitter on base with a bunt single from
DJ Massey, his first of three hits on the day. When he took second base, he added one of UVU's six stolen bases. They extended their lead out to 4-0 on a single from De Anda after
Landon Frei had moved Massey to third base.
Utah Valley loaded the bases in the third inning after a double from Longo II started the inning. The next two hitters,
Joseph Barnhardt and
Joe McBride, were hit to load the bases. The first of four runs scored on a fielder's choice and then a throwing error made it 6-2 with leadoff hitter Frei coming to the plate who struck a fly ball out of the park to make it 8-2 Wolverines.
The offense continued for the Wolverines as
Nate Bach homered for the second of the three home runs hit by UVU hitters on the day. Later in the fourth inning, Massey delivered a two-out single up the middle to bring in Barnhardt, who had singled earlier. Utah Valley held a 10-2 lead to help back their starting pitcher.
Freshman
Landon Zaborowski made his second start of the season and earned his first win of the season with 5 1/3 innings, allowing four scattered hits on 98 pitches. His day was highlighted by a 1-2-3 top of the first inning and strikeouts to end both the second and third innings.
In the fifth inning, Bach singled with two outs to put runners on the first and second for Longo II, who launched a home run over the left field fence to build the lead to 13-2.
The Bears chipped their way back into the contest in the middle innings, cutting the lead to 13-9 after the seventh inning. Still, Utah Valley came right back in the eighth inning with Longo II's leadoff double getting things started before they loaded the bases with a walk to Barnhart and McBride being drilled for the second time today. Massey's second single to centerfield gave UVU some insurance, taking a 14-9 advantage before walks were issued to Frei and De Anda to push the lead out to 16-9. The bases were still loaded for Colyer, who was hit by a pitch to make it 17-9.
Franky Lopez came in to pitch the eighth inning and worked through a leadoff double to get the next three hitters out.
Sawyer Wickstrom pitched the ninth with two flyouts and a game-ending strikeout.

Utah Valley will return home this weekend for a four-game series beginning on Friday, Mar. 14, at 6:05 p.m. MT against NAIA's Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). The Eagles are 5-15 this season and play in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference (GSAC). The series will continue with games through Monday, Mar. 17.
