LYNNWOOD, Wash. – Utah Valley won their third series in a row on Sunday afternoon at Triton Field with a 10-8 come-from-behind win over Seattle U.
Dominic Longo II finished 2-for-5 with a bases-clearing triple to tie the game in the eighth for UVU (15-9, 2-1) before the Wolverines added two runs in the ninth to defeat Seattle U (9-14, 1-2).
Utah Valley plated two runs in the first inning after they loaded the bases on the first three hitters of the game before
Mason Strong singled to make it 1-0 with
Landon Frei adding a fielder's choice to put UVU in front 2-0. The Redhawks scored four runs of their own in the first inning to take a 4-2 advantage.
Longo II had an infield single with one out in the third inning before advancing to second on a wild pitch. He came around to score and cut the deficit to 4-3 on a single from Frei. It's his ninth multi-RBI game of the season and his 23
rd consecutive game that he has reached base. Seattle U extended their lead with a pair of homers to go up 8-3.
In the fourth, Utah Valley cut into the deficit with
Luke Iverson's seventh home run, which leads the Wolverines this season. He also became UVU's all-time leader in being hit by pitches in the contest after being nailed twice.
The Wolverines turned to the bullpen in the fourth inning, and
Landon Zaborowski pitched the next four innings with nine strikeouts and only allowed two hits. His performance kept the Redhawks off the board, including striking out the side in both the fourth and seventh innings. The outing set the stage for the UVU offense, which would deliver in the late innings.
Down to their final out in the eighth inning,
Joseph Barnhardt tripled to start the inning before
CJ Colyer walked, and Iverson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. UVU scored on a
Jayden Smith single to cut the Seattle U deficit to 8-5. Longo II tied the game with his triple to clear the bases and tie the game up at 8-8 in the late innings.
The Redhawks put the leading run just 90 feet away with one out before
Cooper Littledike entered the game to get a strikeout and a groundout to keep the game tied and give the Wolverines a chance to take the lead late.
Utah Valley had their chance to take the lead after Barnhardt's single put runners on the corners with two outs. Seattle U looked like they were getting out of the inning on a strikeout, but the pitch was wild, and Colyer reached to load bases. They took the lead at 9-8 when Iverson was hit for the second time and went up 10-8 when Smith drove in Barnhardt on an error.
Littledike recorded the first two outs of the ninth before the Redhawks brought the winning run to the plate, but the Mapleton, Utah native recorded the game's final out on a groundout.
Iverson, Smith, Longo II, and Frei all recorded multi-RBI games for the Wolverines, who scored ten or more runs for the fifth straight contest and 11 times overall this season.
