OREM, Utah – Utah Valley dropped the middle game of their three-game series with Tarleton State University, 10-7, on Friday afternoon. All Wolverines notched a base with
Mason Strong going 4-for-5 and
Dominic Longo II finishing 3-for-5 in the UVU (25-14, 10-4) defeat. Tarleton State (16-24
, 4-7) was led by Carson Lorch, who drove in four of their ten runs.
The Texans jumped out to a 7-0 lead after an inning and a half. The Wolverines looked to chip away when they loaded the bases in the second after singles by
Brody Block,
CJ Colyer, and
Joseph Barnhardt, but they only got one run across as
DJ Massey hit into a double play, but Block scored from third to make it 7-1.
Garrett Miller tossed a career-high 2 2/3 innings in relief for the Wolverines, allowing five hits, two runs, and striking out three in his outing. His scoreless third and fourth frames gave the Utah Valley offense a chance to get back into the ballgame.
The offense would have to wait until the sixth to get something back on the board.
Landon Frei hit his 12
th homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-2 before Longo II singled and Strong doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position. Following a mound visit by Tarleton State, the combination of Bach and Block delivered RBI singles to make it 9-4. The rally ended on a single from Massey that scored one, but Block was thrown out trying to get to third on a throw home.
Alan Huerta was key in the middle innings, tossing three innings without allowing a run or hit. He finished with three strikeouts and was his longest outing since pitching 3 1/3 innings at Seattle U. He also threw three innings at UC Riverside back in February.
In the eighth inning, Strong reached base on a single to left field before advancing to second on a wild pitch. He scored to make it 9-6 after moving to third on a flyball and scoring on a sac fly from Block.
They made it interesting in the ninth as they loaded the bases trailing 10-6. Massey singled before a pitch hit Frei, and Longo II singled to right field. They made it 10-7 after a single from Strong, but Ethan Jaques got Bach to strike out to hold on for the win.
