OREM, Utah – Utah Valley dropped the first of two meetings with the University of Utah on Tuesday night at UCCU Ballpark. UVU (25-17) was led by a 3-for-3 performance from
CJ Colyer with two doubles and a triple in the contest for three of UVU's seven hits. Utah (17-19) scored nine runs in the first two frames to take an early lead and never look back.
The Wolverines cut into the early 9-0 deficit after a walk to
Brody Block before
Jimmy De Anda doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Colyer lined a triple to right center field to make it 9-2 for the first of his three extra-base hits.
DJ Massey singled to center field to make it 9-3 before
Luke Iverson capped the scoring in the second with a two-run homer to right field to cut the lead to 9-5.
The Utah Valley bullpen was a bright spot in the contest. They slowed down the Utah offense early with
Garrett Miller tossing 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and having a pair of strikeouts before giving way to
Cooper Littledike, who threw two innings with a pair of strikeouts to retire the minimum six hitters.
Utah turned to lefty Mateus Conaway (3-0) in the fourth inning after Colyer's first of two doubles, with this one coming to right field, and a pitch hit
Cougar Cooke. The transfer from Whitman College got out of the inning unscathed and proceeded to not allow a hit or base runner until Colyer's second double with one out in the sixth, but they would not get a run across.
Last night's starter,
Ray Hernandez, came in for UVU in the eighth inning and bounced back to hold Utah scoreless with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.
Landon Frei's 40-game reached base streak, the longest in program history, was snapped tonight in the loss. He passed Chris Benson for the longest streak in program history in Monday's loss to BYU. Iverson has a chance to break Frei's record on Friday night against CBU.
