Offensive Onslaught Propels Utah Valley Past Idaho State, 16-6

LAS VEGAS — Emma Haygood hit a grand slam and drove in five, Britney Moreno reached base in all five plate appearances, and Megan Sterzer drove in and scored two as Utah Valley rode an offensive onslaught to top the Idaho State Bengals, 16-6 in six innings.

Haygood finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs, while Moreno went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks. Sterzer went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two walks, and two runs scored.

Utah Valley scored its most runs in a game since 2022, and scored in every inning for the first time since that same season. The last time the Wolverines scored 16 or more was in an 18-14 win at New Mexico State, and the last time UVU scored in every inning was in a 14-0 win over Utah Tech. It's the seventh time in program history the Wolverines scored in every inning, and the first in a game that went longer than five innings.

The two teams traded blows through the first three frames before Utah Valley was able to pull away at the midway point of the ballgame. The Wolverines struck first in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by Bailey Marvin, but the Bengals responded with two in the top of the second. Utah Valley retook the lead at 3-2 with two more sac flies in the bottom of the second.

ISU's Kira Day launched a three-run homer in the third to restore the Bengals' lead at 5-3, but the Wolverines rallied for four in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. One came across on a bases-loaded passed ball and another scored on a fielding error by the pitcher. Moreno then delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run single to make it 7-5.

Sterzer extended the Wolverine lead to four with a two-run single in the fourth. Utah Valley got within run-rule range in the fifth after scoring two and getting the potential winning run on base, but a diving catch by Day in right extended the game another frame.

ISU got one back in the top of the sixth on a solo homer to make it 11-6, but that was all the Bengals would get.

Utah Valley rallied for five in the bottom half of the inning to walk it off. Moreno picked up an RBI single to make it 12-6, then after a walk to Angelique Mann, Haygood closed it out with a grand slam to right.

The Wolverines will return to action later this afternoon against the UNLV Rebels, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. MT. The game will be streamed at youtube.com/@UNLVAthletics, with live stats available at GoUVU.com/stats.
