OREM, Utah — A program-record 5,541 fans watched Utah Valley face national power Nebraska on Saturday night at the UCCU Center. The fifth-ranked Cornhuskers won eight of 10 matches to claim a 32-6 victory in the final dual of the regular season for both teams.
The Wolverines (5-8) earned wins from
Caleb Uhlenhopp and No. 7
David Evans. Evans defeated No. 19 Chance Lamer by an 8-5 decision.
"I'm proud of the fight that our guys displayed against the number five team in the country," said head coach
Adam Hall. "We were in tight matches with several of their returning All-Americans.
Kael Bennie was significantly closer this year in a rematch from last year and
David Evans got another ranked win at home. Even though we were outclassed in a few weight classes, our future is bright. I'm grateful for the fans who showed out tonight to set a new attendance record! We will spend the next two weeks dialing in to be at our best for the Big 12 Championships. Go Wolverines!"
Nebraska (13-6) opened the dual with three bonus-point victories from defending national champion and No. 3 Antrell Taylor, No. 7 LJ Araujo, and No. 4 Christopher Minto. Taylor won by technical fall over
Ian Fritz at 157, Araujo pinned
Zyon Trujillo at 165, and Minto recorded a 15-7 major decision over
Hudson Rogers with a late takedown and riding-time point at 174 pounds.
Uhlenhopp faced Tyler Eise in the 184-pound match. The bout was tied 1-1 with under a minute remaining when Eise nearly got behind Uhlenhopp. Uhlenhopp rolled through the attempt and secured the decisive takedown with 44 seconds left in the match, riding out Eise for a 4-1 decision.
The Cornhuskers won the next five bouts, including ranked matchups at 197 and 285 pounds. No. 10 Camden McDanel defeated No. 29
Kael Bennie, 10-5, and No. 3 AJ Ferrari used a strong third period to earn a 19-4 technical fall over No. 27
Jack Forbes. Ferrari led 3-1 entering the third period before scoring four takedowns to pull away. He secured the technical fall with a last-second takedown.
Nebraska then won three straight matches by decision, beginning with Kael Lauridsen's 8-2 victory over No. 25
Bridger Ricks at 125 pounds. No. 10 Jacob Van Dee led
Geronimo Rivera 1-0 late in the 133-pound match before scoring the only takedown with 32 seconds remaining. Rivera escaped but ran out of time as Van Dee secured a 4-1 win.
In one of the night's featured bouts, No. 19
Haiden Drury faced No. 4 Brock Hardy, a native of Brigham City. Hardy took a 3-1 lead with a first-period takedown and extended it to 4-1 with an escape in the second. Drury added an escape in the third to make it 4-2 with one minute remaining, but Hardy held on and added a riding-time point for a 5-2 decision.
Evans provided late-match drama for the Wolverines, breaking a 5-5 tie with a takedown with nine seconds remaining against Lamer. Lamer scored the first takedown and led 3-1 after one period. Evans trailed 4-1 before tying the match late in the second with a blast double, but Lamer escaped to regain the lead. Evans nearly scored on a head throw in the third but got an escape to tie the match 5-5 with 1:32 remaining. He secured the winning takedown in the final seconds for an 8-5 decision.
