RENO, Nev. — Utah Valley University dropped a 5-3 decision in 10 innings Sunday afternoon to Nevada at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Luke Iverson went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while
Chipper Beck recorded two doubles for Utah Valley (2-5). Sean Yamaguchi hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Nevada (3-3).
Beck recorded the game's first hit in the top of the third inning with a long drive to left-center that bounced off the wall for a double. Iverson followed with his first home run of the season to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. The homer was the 24th of his career, moving him into a tie for seventh place on UVU's all-time list with
Cole Jordan.
Utah Valley continued to apply pressure in the inning, loading the bases after a single by
Mason Hamlin, a walk to
Kaden Carpenter and an infield single by
Mason Strong. The Wolf Pack escaped without further damage.
Starter
Landon Zaborowski held Nevada scoreless through four innings and allowed just one hit before the Wolf Pack tied the game in the fifth. Nevada loaded the bases and scored on a walk and a wild pitch. He finished with 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts only allowing three hits.
Garrett Miller entered in relief and induced a groundout to keep the game tied.
Beck led off the seventh with a double to right-center on an 0-1 pitch against Nevada reliever Jordan Giacomini, but Giacomini retired the next three batters to end the threat. It's the first time in his collegiate career that Beck has recorded two doubles in a game.
Miller continued his strong relief outing, working around a one-out single by Jackson Waller in the seventh. Utah Valley turned in two key defensive plays to keep the Wolf Pack off the board. Hamlin made a diving stop near the third-base line and threw across the diamond for the second out, and Carpenter made a full-extension diving catch in right field to end the inning.
The redshirt junior from Boise set a career high with 3 1/3 innings pitched, surpassing his previous mark set last week at Pacific.
Utah Valley regained the lead in the top of the ninth with a two-out rally when
Brody Block scored on Iverson's RBI single. It marked Iverson's 30th career multi-RBI game.
Trey Jacobsen came on to close in the ninth. Nevada doubled to open the inning, but the relay from Block to Hamlin to Strong cut down the potential tying run at the plate. The Wolf Pack later tied the game on a slow roller by Jack Metcho.
