Katschke Homers, but Utah Valley Falls to Cincinnati

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball lost 6-3 to Cincinnati on Tuesday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark. Hunter Katschke hit his seventh home run of the season, and Quinn Holt kept Cincinnati (17-6) hitless for over two innings for UVU (10-9).

Utah Valley's Garrett Miller tossed the first three innings of the game for the Wolverines and limited Cincinnati's offense to just one run. He worked around the Bearcats threatening with runners in scoring position in the first two innings. They broke through on an RBI single by Enzo Infelise snuck through the left side of the infield.

Utah Valley's offense threatened to take an early lead in the first inning and worked three walks against UC's starting pitcher. Chipper Beck and Kaden Carpenter both walked in the first inning but did not come around to score. In the second, Luke Iverson worked a five-pitch walk to spark the first rally of the day. The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead when Iverson came around to score on a wild pitch. UVU looked to score more, but a double play took two baserunners off the basepaths and ended the threat.

Utah Valley went up 2-1 in the third inning after DJ Massey was hit by a pitch and later stole second base. He scored on a single to center field by Beck. The BYU transfer has now reached base safely in the last 16 games. He trails only Carpenter who extended his streak to 18 games with a walk, and Hamlin increased his reach base streak to 17.

UVU senior Quinn Holt came in from the bullpen and recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth with a pair of strikeouts. He started the fifth inning with a strikeout and finished his day with 2 2/3 innings pitched and three strikeouts.

The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when they pushed across four runs on a double by Jack Natili before Ryan Tyranski launched his second home run of the series to put Cincinnati in front, 5-2.

Hunter Katschke did not start but came in to pinch-hit in the seventh inning and hit his seventh home run of the season, which leads UVU and is third in the WAC. It was his 31st career home run and cut the deficit for the Wolverines to 5-3.

Cincinnati added a run late for a 6-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
