RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Utah Valley dropped both games of its Friday doubleheader against the California Baptist Lancers, falling 3-0 in game one before losing an extra-inning heartbreaker, 3-2 in 11 innings.
Lily Riley gave the Wolverines 11.1 stellar innings of work, throwing a complete game in the opener before tossing 5.1 innings of relief in the nightcap, allowing just three ER across those appearances.
GAME ONE
Utah Valley fell on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel, as the top two arms in the WAC went head to head in Lily Riley and Miranda de Nava. After Britney Moreno led off the game with a single, de Dava retired the next 19 Wolverines in order.
CBU got its first two runs in the first and looked to have added a third, but a perfectly-executed relay from Angelique Mann to Moreno to Mya Higareda cut down a runner trying to score on a double to left center.
The Lancers tacked on another run in the sixth via a sacrifice fly.
Utah Valley got the tying run to the dish in the seventh via a Bailey Marvin walk and a Mann single, but the Wolverines were unable to capitalize.
GAME TWO
Utah Valley battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game and force extra innings. Payge Armendariz got the start, tossing five innings and allowing two.
The Lancers got one in the second on a sacrifice fly, then tacked on another in the third on a solo homer.
The Wolverines cut the deficit in half as Hall hit a line drive to center that was misplayed by the center fielder, allowing Mann to score. Moreno tied the game at two with a single to center in the fifth, scoring Amber Rodriguez, but Ry Binne was cut down at the plate trying to score from second.
Utah Valley got runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, and 10th, but was unable to manufacture the go-ahead run.
The game came to an end in the bottom of the 11th as Hall dropped a tricky pop fly down the line behind first base, allowing the winning run to score from second.
The Wolverines and Lancers will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. MT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats at GoUVU.com/stats.
