OREM, Utah – Utah Valley defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 15-3 on Sunday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
Mason Strong finished 2-for-2 with a career-high six RBIs, including a grand slam in the third inning. It marks the first time since the 2024 season that a Wolverine has recorded six RBIs, when
Matthew Schwarz reached the mark against Northwest Nazarene.
Utah Valley (12-14) had four players record multi-hit games, including home runs from
Hunter Katschke and
Jimmy De Anda. CSUSB (17-16) was led by Alejandro McKay, who finished with two RBIs.
The Wolverines got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first inning, as Katschke hit his ninth home run of the season over the left-field fence to give UVU a 1-0 lead.
Kaden Carpenter extended the lead to 2-0 after drawing a walk, his first of three, to tie a career-high. The senior also tied a career-high with four runs scored. He later scored on Strong's sac fly after swiping second and third base.
In the second inning, De Anda recorded the first of his two hits for his first multi-hit game of the season before
DJ Massey singled to put two runners on. The bases were loaded when Carpenter walked, and Strong delivered a grand slam to left field to make it 6-0.
Utah Valley continued to apply pressure, going up 7-0 on De Anda's first home run of the season to left-center field. The Wolverines added two more runs later in the inning, as Strong singled to score
Liwai Correa and
Chipper Beck followed with an RBI single to right-center to bring home Katschke, extending the lead to 9-0.
Utah Valley starting pitcher
George Albrecht made his first career start, setting a career high with three innings pitched and adding three strikeouts. His previous highs were 2 2/3 innings last season at Northern Colorado and two strikeouts, which he had recorded four times.
Aaron Rice threw two innings out of the bullpen, facing seven hitters. He needed just eight pitches to get through the fourth inning and allowed only one baserunner on a walk in the fifth.
Correa led off the bottom of the fifth by being hit by a pitch. The redshirt freshman, who has seen limited action this season, scored a career-high three runs, reaching base twice via hit-by-pitch. He scored again in the fifth on a Carpenter single.
Brody Block later drove in a run with the bases loaded, and
Cooper Brass added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 12-0.
Cal State San Bernardino scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-3, but Utah Valley responded in the bottom half. Correa was hit by a pitch, and Carpenter and
Joseph Barnhardt drew walks to load the bases. JC transfer
Will Applegate then singled home two runs to make it 14-3, which set a new career-high before Block followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring at 15-3.
Utah Valley tied a season high with 15 runs scored, matching the mark for the second consecutive game.
