OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball split a Saturday doubleheader with Northern Colorado at UCCU Ballpark. UVU (7-7) fell 14-3 in the first game but responded with a 12-1 run-rule victory over UNC (2-16).
Quinn Holt tossed five innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts in the second game on Saturday. Five Wolverine hitters had two or more RBIs in the second game.
GAME 1
Utah Valley fell behind early and could not recover in the front end of the doubleheader.
Jayden Smith finished with three hits, starting with an RBI double in the second inning to score
Mason Strong, who led off with a walk.
The Wolverines looked for a big inning in the third, starting with a
DJ Massey walk and an infield single by
Luke Iverson to put two runners on base. They loaded the bases after
Kaden Carpenter worked a walk. UVU pushed a run across on a wild pitch before
Chipper Beck's groundout made it 10-3.
Cohen Baack made his UVU debut, tossing 2 2/3 innings and allowing two hits. It was the first appearance for the Arizona high school product.
Jordan Chancellor saw his first game action on the UCCU Ballpark mound, tossing one inning in relief.
GAME 2
Quinn Holt surrendered a run in the first inning while allowing his only hit of the game on a first-inning single from Easton Bryant.
The Wolverines went on to score 12 unanswered runs and tied it in the first inning when Carpenter and Strong looked to execute a double steal, and the throw from the UNC catcher got into the outfield to allow a run to score.
Hunter Katschke homered in the bottom of the second inning to give UVU a 2-1 lead. Holt started a stretch of retiring nine in a row for the Keystone transfer, who added two strikeouts in the third and finished the fourth inning on just seven pitches.
Utah Valley's offense started to create separation in the third inning when
Mason Hamlin homered to left field to make it 4-1. He finished the second game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs for the UVU offense. The Wolverines extended the lead in the fourth on a two-run single by
Luke Iverson. Following a single by Hamlin, Carpenter hit a home run that snuck over the left-field wall for a three-run shot to put UVU in front 9-1. It's Carpenter's fourth homer of the season and he's now tied with Katschke for the team lead.
Katschke finished Game two going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Wolverines. He brought home a run in the sixth inning on a groundout before
Brody Block nearly hit a homer to right in the sixth inning, but his double plated two more for the Wolverines.
Chance Wallace followed up Holt's strong outing with two innings of his own, allowing one hit and adding two walks. It's the first two-hitter tossed by the UVU pitching staff since April 21, 2024, when
Chase Hennessey,
Robby Butenschoen and
Ethan Fowlks held UT Arlington to just a pair of knocks.
Iverson finished 2-for-3 in the second game with two RBIs as five different Wolverines had two or more RBIs in the game.
